Question

Yes I can type where I used to use handwritting recognition, but what I really want to do is to type meeting notes on the Visor and issue them from my desktop using Microsoft Word. Do you just type it in the memo field and cut and paste into Word? I have SmartDoc which will create a .dbf file in my backup folder on the PC but do I need to convert this to Word now.
The other keyboard (GoType) company gives you software (Word Sleuth & Thesaurus). Why not Targus? It sure would have been nice to get some direct software so I wouldn't have to play the conversion game. Thanks for the help.

Found PalmDocs from Preston's Picks over at http://www.zdnet.com/downloads/pilo.../prescrnt.html. Seems to fill the bill except the shareware is crippled and won't save back to the palm. Why do I have to spend $20 more for software that should have come with the keyboard? Is this the best alternative? What are the rest of you using?

surfer,

After trying out "TakeNote" I bought a copy to use with my Stowaway keyboard.

Yes, I know it's "free" with the GoType, but I haven't a GoType for my Visor.

"TakeNote" works perfectly well with the Stowaway. It keeps up with my typing and does both "DOC" and "MEMO" type files.

If you read the article in Visor Central that compared GoType with Targus, the included software gave GoType a bonus point.

I have downloaded and am using QED with my Stowaway as it was recommended by the same VisorCentral article. You can download a trial copy at http://visionary2000.com/qed but be aware that the nag screen pops up OFTEN. It's $20 to register, and unfortunately it takes "up to two days" for them to mail you the registration code.

QED lets you type large documents (not limited to 4k). You can then do a HotSync and convert your Palm doc using the free QED converter (http://visionary2000.com/qed/qex.htm), or use the Palm Doc <--> MS Word converter called PalmDocs, at http://visionary2000.com/palmdocs/index.htm.

Surfer -- I don't know how familiar you are with the business end of this kind of product, but I have think the lack of docware probably has to do with the fact that Targus thought that the keyboard would still sell without the software. I don't know that GoType always came with TakeNote; it's quite possible they added the software AFTER they learned about the Stowaway and felt they needed a leg up. Looking at the Stowaway and GoType, the Stowaway has some real revolutionary design to it. I bet the original R&D cost was quite a bit higher for that over the GoType.
