Moving Wordsmith's Spellchecker

Ok, I've read how you can move the spellchecker to a memory card but I have yet to see the DETAILED explanation of how to do so. By detailed, I mean, what program do you have to use and where (as in, what folder) do you put it? Also, can the data files for the thesaurus also be put on the memory card.

For details, I've got a Platinum with a CF Memplug (16 MB CF card installed), Pidirect 1.03, PiVFS Manager Beta v0.5, and Wordsmith 2.1.2

To make my question more specific, which do I use, PiVFS or PiDirect. Does it matter? Can they be used at the same time without conflict? What directory do I put the files in?

I'd like to free up the space that these files use but I can't seem to figure out how.

Thanks

- Burns

Have you read the manual? There's a whole section on VFS support (Chapter 8 I believe).

I think he was speaking of moving the SPELLCHECKER to the card, not the VFS capabilties of WS.

Sorry! I can't help here...

Put it in the PiDirect directory you use the most with Wordsmith. Wordsmith should then be able to use it. Same goes with the Thesaurus data.

Ok, after much fidgeting and messing around and hitting my head against the wall, I figured out that you have to move 3 files to the PiDirect directory. Here they are:

SpellSmith.prc
spelldata.pdb or something like that
and
thesdata.pdb

that got it working.

This reply is to help those who might look for this answer in the future.

I finally decided to try this since the new version of WordSmith is out. The SpellChecker is much faster and I decided to keep it, I just really did not want it in RAM. So, I began investigating how to make this work.

I am using a Sony CLIE 760, so I have VFS Support. I went out and downloaded PiDirectVFS and Filez. Filez is freeware and a great FileManager program for PalmOS.

I created a directory on my MemoryStick called /Palm/PiDirect.
I used Filez to move SpellSmith.prc, SpellData.pdb, and ThesData.pdb into the above directory.
Under PiDirect | Preferences you must UnCheck "Set card database as read-only". This step is very important. If you do not do this, SpellCheck will function, but every single word will show up when you run it.

Obviously, PiDirect must be enabled for this to work, but it does work. Both the Dictionary and Thes. work fine.

I would think that you could accomplish the same thing with a Visor running OS3.5, but you have to have PiDirect for Visors.

If you are using a Visor with OS3.1, you could probably use PiVFSMgr to simulate VFS on those devices and then install PiDirectVFS with it. I have not personally tried the combination of the two, but I have used PiVFSMgr on my Deluxe and it worked fine, just really slow.
