-- Aluminum Bodies for Visor (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=9062)

I started a thread about Aluminum replacement casings quite a long time ago, and I would definetly be interested in a Metal replacement casing. What kind of finish will the cases use? Will they be completely polished or will they have some kind of texture? Also, will the case make myhand smell like Metal after using it?

I am considering manufacturing shells in CARBON FIBER! Yes, thats right! Carbon Fiber! the material used in super motocross bikes and expensive razor scooters! lighter than aluminum and way cooler looking! is anyone interested? the cost would be $300 per unit.

Thumbs up

I want a carbon fibre!

Keep me on your email list for aluminium bodies.

Cool

'Tis funny, how about a year ago several of us were contemplating aluminum and carbon fiber bodies for our Handsprings. Please keep me informed about the carbon fiber and aluminum casings!

Lightbulb something to consider...

hey ckrupsha, you might want to consider an option like a hinged Palm III style screen cover as I remember when the visors originally came out there were countless rants about how awkward the clip-on hard cover is to use. (personally I never really had any problems with it.) My VDX's warranty will be up soon anyway. I would pay up to about a hundred bucks for a visor body without a screen cover and maybe twenty or thirty more for one with a flip cover, provided it was well done (durable, doesn't interfere with springboard modoles that protrude past the top and also made of the same material.) By the way, since you wrote about high tooling costs, I'm assuming that you are considering die casting, opposed to machining.(?) What kind of surface finish are you looking at? I'm kind of a sucker for a nice satin metallic finish.

Oh, one last thing... I think a visor case would look pretty slick without the grooves. Lots of luck.

OK, I lied. one more thing. Carbon fiber is really cool, and I would lust after a housing made of it, but at 300 bucks, it's just too expensive for me to consider.

Question

Is this just a faceplate or a whole new body. If its just a face plate then sry, no point really. If its a whole new body made of metal...Count me in!

When you produce a new case ad a better screen protection.

Metal Case?

"Reasonable Cost" depends on what it accomplishes:

1) Cool Look only - $20
2) Support additional enhancements - $50
3) Substantially improved survivability - $100
4) #2 & #3 together? - $150 & up

If it had some tapped holes in it in various places to allow, perhaps, hinged metal covers or belt clips or who knows (created by yourself &/or anyone else), then it would grab my curiousity and, I'll bet, that of others.

Thumbs up I'd like to do it myself

Either aluminum or carbon fiber would be interesting, but I've got a brand new NC mill that I want to play with- if you can provide an STL file or even the straight G-code, I'd be willing to see what I can make myself.

I figure it might be possible to machine the aluminum directly or even machine a mold and attempt to lay up the carbon fiber in that. (hmmm... maybe proto with fiberglass first)

Okay, maybe it's a bit ambitious for a first project- maybe in a few months after I've had time to work with the mill.

What? Only carbon fiber? That's not exotic enough! Why not brushed titanium? Or while we are at it, real platinum for my Platinum! <sarcasm>

Talking No Thanks

No Thanks, I dont really like the look of metal. I rather enjoy my Prism With the GoStyle Faceplate

So whats the news on this stuff?

So how is your idea coming along? Have you made any deals and such? Do you think your estimated price of Below $100 has changed at all? Thanks
