RF Optimized Prism???

I recently upgraded my visor deluxe to a visor prism, and discovered
that I now have weaker reception on my Geode GPS module on my new prism.
About a year ago, I sent my then visor deluxe back to Handspring to get
an "RF Optimized" version. After doing so, the satellites locked more
quickly and strongly.

So my questions are:

* Does the Prism have the same "RF optimization" issues as the deluxe?
Could I use a tool like Afterburner to underclock the CPU to help
alleviate the problem? Which serial # ranges are affected?

* Is Handspring still running their "RF optimization" exchange program
where you can send in your visor and have it replaced with an
"RF optimized" version? Would this apply for the Geode GPS even though
Geodiscovery is no longer is business? Would it apply to my
refurbished visor prism? My (previous) deluxe was purchased new.

I can still return the refurbished unit to Fry's for another
(or maybe a new prism) if I just got unlucky with the unit I received.

Thanks...

All Prisms and Platinums are RF optimized from the beginning. You
may have a dud.

autocode1,

I have the same situation as you. I replace my Visor Deluxe with the RF optimized and the Geode worked fiine. When I tried to use the Geode with a Prism I had poor result similar to the unoptimized Visor Deluxe.

yes, some are much better than others

I have had 5 different Prisms, and used all with the Geode. There are huge differences in the "optimization" of each. Handspring denies that they can be optimized, but I have exchanged them for that reason ( telling them that I am using a Geode), and got good results.

Geode

I'm currently using Magellan GPS with my Visor Platinum but I'm upgrading ot the Prism (arrives tomorrow ) and I'm considering getting the Geode (the magellan is not mine - just borrowing it) - I have a couple of questions about the Geode - 1st when zoomed in sufficiently to see individual streets - does it have the street names along the streets or do you have to tap on a a street to get its name? 2nd - does the Geode software work in color on the Prism?

Anyone out there tried both the Magellan and the Geode? Want to get as much input as possible before spending ~$150...

Thank you.

Not tried either, but I came across this (rather less than glowing) review of the Geode:

Click the "All User Opinions" hyperlink to see what people really think of it! It's a bit disappointing really, because the concept is obviously very good, and there were a couple for sale on EBay recently that I thought of buying... until I read this!

Hope this helps

Jules

Oh, BTW, I think the mapping is all in B&W as well, so Prism owners (like me) will be rather disappointed

deluxe to prism with magellan - had good results

That's interesting that you had problems with the upgrade from the visor deluxe to the visor prism. I had just the opposite happen when I upgraded from a deluxe to a prism with the magellan gps. i.e. the reception seems to be much better now.

Just a thought.
Remember the Visor Deluxe - Glenayre Activelink combo box.

They beefed up the RF protection on the Deluxe for this module, because the Activelink module would cause interferance with other Visors. When you look up the Activelink Compatibility...you only see-Visor Deluxe listed.

So your Visor Deluxe was built to stand up against more RF then your Prism. Just a thought.

Umm... I think you have it backwards, Actually the Visor is the *SOURCE* of the RF and it's interfering with the GEODE, MAGELLAN, Visor Phone, Activelink etc. reception of external signals. They added shielding inside to cut down on the rf radiation the Visor produces internally..
