Hybrid-schmybrid, No PDA-Cell Phone for me!

It occurred to me that one of the underlying reasons that the march toward hybrid PDA-cell combos will be slow slog is that families are pretty quick to hand over a cell phone, but not nearly so willing to hand over their PDA. I give my cell phone over to the wife, the kids, my mother fairly regularly when they are making long rides, going off to the mall, etc. I would be much less enthusiastic about handing over a $500 combo device. Better to have my PDA able to "talk" through my cell phone (bluetooth) than have the two inexorably linked together.

true, true.

I just assumed they wouldn't catch on for a while because they cost 500$. I mean I'm addicted to gadgets, but i cant justify a purchase like that.

so i carry a VDX and a nokia 3390. even when they were new the two of them came to about 350US.

VDX Blues

I reluctantly upgraded from a VDX to a VPL so I could connect my Visor to my Kyocera "came free with the plan" 2035a digital phone and enjoy the functionality of the Treo for under $150 ($100 for used VPL on eBay, $30 cable, $20 for IambicMail). Works wonderfully (atleast when I am in digital coverage). The beauty beyond my out-of-pocket is that the company covers my data transfers within the company cell phone plan...

There was allegedly some kind of connectivity possible with Palm OS 3.1, but I could never connect...

(I posted this in another thread but I think its even more relevant in this one!)

from CNET's news.com:

http://news.com.com/2100-1040-959402.html?tag=lh

quote:
"To date, Handspring's monochrome Treo 180 and color Treo 270 have shown anemic sales," Bear Stearns analyst Andrew Neff wrote in a research note in late August. This month he noted that sales of the new Treo 300, which runs on Sprint's network, seem to be headed down the same road.

They also add..

quote:
"It's not so much that they don't produce good products because they do," Coster said. However, he said such devices remain pricey and many consumers are waiting for such combination devices to get cheaper.

I think that says it all..

Just a matter of time before they start to circle the drain for their mistakes...

Personally I will never buy a Treo type device for reasons others mentioned above (unless they were giving them away for next to nothing {give them time , remember the visor phone}, or it didn't cost anymore than my regular cell phone to use/operate, or if I could expense the whole cost of it and/or use to my company (not possible now or in the near future) ,

However, I would really like to see a PDA has 820.11 and/or Bluetooth built in.. Now that would be useful.
