-- Screen contrast fade problem (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=2030)

Unhappy

A couple of days ago, I fired up my VDx and within minutes, the screen contrast faded away to the point that it looked like it was turned off.

Since then, every time I turn it on, the screen fades away in a matter of minutes. I have set the contrast slider at its highest value, but this makes the screen just barely visible after it fades out.

It worked flawlessly for about 10 days before this fade problem started. I have tried resetting, and replacing the batteries (Duracell alkaline, not rechargable). No luck.

Anyone else seen this problem? I assume I'll have to return it. I'm glad to hear positive stories about Handspring Tech support!

cheers,

The same exact thing happened to me. Except it happened after 3 days opposed to your 10. I sent mine back on Dec. 27th. They received it on Dec. 30th(USPS tracking). I'm hoping to have a new one towards the end of this week, but you never know.

Someone posted here somewhere that there was a bug that caused this if you use apps that use 16 grayscale. (haven't verified it though)

That's interesting, but I hadn't installed any new programs immediately prior to this problem starting...

I am using the following add-on programs:
TrekSounds, TealGlance, AvantGo, Mirror, MineHunter, Remote, Smallware solitaire,
and StarPilot.

Another note: I am having trouble doing a hard reset. As I understand it, I am supposed to hold down the power button, hit the reset button, wait for the palm software startup screen, then release the power button. Then a warning message is supposed to appear, but I haven't seen it. Am I missing something?

Hey JHromadka,

Are you saying that installing one 16 grayscale app can affect every program you have installed and make them all unreadable and fade in and out? That doesn't seem very likely.

I did a hard reset after my screen started fading in and out and it was still doing it afterwards.

I'm definitely convinced it was a hardware problem.

The very first time I ever used the visor, my screen had similar problems, eventually getting to the point where I couldn't see anything unless I squeezed the two sides of the visor together. I had NO other programs on my visor other than those automatically included.

The Tech Support folks at Handspring told me to return the visor. It took about 4 weeks to get a replacement, but that was during their "adjustment period" in November/December. Shipping should be faster now.
