jradi,

It's almost been a week and I'm anxiously awaiting my silver face plate. You mentioned that the silver was made of plastic, thinner-feeling that the original from Handspring...Is it plastic? The site called it anodized metallic. I will be a little disappointed but, not surprised considering the price. How was the fit? Did you notice anything being loose when you replaced your face plate? Thanks in advance for your comments.

I should have updated my remark which was unfair. It fealt thin in my hands, but when I took my VDX apart and compared them, they were the same. The plastic seemed to bend very easily in my hands, but when you put it all together with the screen behind it - it becomes very rigid - I'm certain it was built to the same specifics.

As far as plastic vs. aluminum. It is plastic, otherwise it wouldn't have cost so little (check out www.dave.com for a price comparison on an aluminum replacement case - $250).

I think what they mean by annodized aluminum is that it doesn't look like the color is molded onto the plastic, so it might wear away with time - I didn't want to scratch it to find out. Still, the color is amazing - far shinnier than anything else I own - it definitely looks like shiny aluminum.

As far as the coating goes - as I think about it, I'm almost certain that it's not molded in because of the different patterns that they have available - like strawberries - there's no way they could've affordably molded that into the plastic...

Looking at my other toys - laptop and rio500 - I think this is the norm as I'm noticing that the aluminum coating is wearing away on the corners of both - no biggie - at least it's replaceable and pretty cheap. A breath of life into my 18 month old VDX. I'd almost traded it in when the platinum and edge came out - maybe now I can wait until a real developmental jump occurs (faster processor, more memory, or integrated mp3/sound)...
