Question

I'm planning on buying a PDA soon, however, I can not decide between the Visor Deluxe or Palm IIIxe.

I'm into camping and the such, so a GPS is a plus. (Because of that, maybe I should just ignore the Visor )
A modem is a plus.
Battery life must be long.
I like games, so the better buttons is a positive.
I'm on a $250 budget, so either is okay, but the Palm V or Palm IIIc is too much.
The more rugged one would be a better choice.

I've tried a Palm IIIc and V at CompUSA, as well as a Visor. The Visor is nice, and I like the Blue/Ice casing. However, the modem is BLACK. The MP3 Player will probably be BLACK. Will all modules be BLACK?! Do BLACK modules mix well with ICE backs?

Thank you.

Well, eventually a GPS module will arrive (I hope). My batteries last about two weeks, but that's because I use Visor for at least 30 minutes a day. Personally, the buttons on the Visor have a better feel, because of the little click, not like a sunken feeling in the Palm. To me, I really don't care about the looks of the modules compared to the Visor. And I'm pretty sure black to blue won't look so ugly that people will be running, screaming by how hideous it is.

If a GPS is important to your outdoor activities, then you probably want a separate GPS anyway - one with a weather proof housing or one of the nautical units. It is when the clouds descend that I most need directional assistance, and it is why I'm still fond of an orienteering compass and detailed topo maps.

One of the great things about the visor is the backup module.

If you're going to be outdoors a lot, the backup module option means that you won't have to lug around a laptop or worry about a modem sync to ensure your data is safe... just carry around an extra set of AAA's instead.

The backup module would put you slightly over your budget, but it's worth it for peace of mind.

FWIW, the innopak/2V molded in ICE seems pretty snazzy!

There is a previous discussion of this dilemma in the Off Topic forum, with some Pocket PC flamebait to boot.
