please don't do the mac to pc comparison. i really don't see the point. the purpose of the faceoffs should be in helping users decide which products to purchase. a review of the two desktop versions does nothing towards this--it'll just degrade into another useless rant about the pluses of pc and mac operating system. no one is gonna use the information in such a faceoff to decide which platform is for them.

I voted for the MemPlug vs. FlashPlus faceoff but I would also like to see the King Kong vs. Godzilla article

Of course I don't think people have the option of buying king kong or godzilla

I really like the head to head stuff. I think that PDABuzz did a couple like Vaja vs EB Slipper and the Quick Office vs Desktop to Go, but I haven't seen anything since. As long as things are kept equal. I'd like to see, ThinkDb vs HandDbase, VisorPhone vs what ever product is similar. (I'm still trying to justify this purchase to my wife). Hey why not a three-way?

Regardless of the GMS vs CDMA phone system. I would also like to see a face off of the Visor Phone vs the SB3000

Actually, you do -- there's a garmungous* action figure of King Kong in stores right now, and there's been Godzilla toys around since before my plates knitted together so I'm sure you could find some if you wanted. then there's the video store (as long as it's not R.S.T. Video anyway).

*well, I think it's ten-inch tall anyway. so If you had one you could tell people, "hey, wanna see my ten-inch monkey?"

considering the Mac version hasn't been updated since before I got my VDx, a comparison of the more-current Windows version against that would be interesting to me.
It wouldn't really be a comparison of the operating systems; based on this board relatively few use a handheld independent of a desktop or laptop computer.

However, I'd actually be more interested in a Mac Palm Desktop vs. Entourage face-off. (I was going to switch but I've run into problems and don't know if I should keep trying to clear 'em up or not.)

How about an alternative proposal? In addition to the regular VCA award and honorable mention, how about including a People's Choice award for each catagory. Then you can say that the item won the approval of the staff's reviewers but also the people. If the choices are different, thats okay. You just have a winner, an honorable mention, and a people's choice.

I like Jason's idea, maybe twist it up, for day 5 you chose Memplug & FlashDrive, etc. At the end of the awards, post them all and let people pick one from each category, then (maybe) everyone will be satisfied and the losers won't come cry unscrupulous advertising or biased reviews.

Thumb Keyboards

What I've been waiting to see is a comparison of all the current thumb typing keyboards. The Snap N' Type is the only one I've really been keeping my eyes on, but I know there are a couple others out there.

Whoa, this is totally offtopic, but, Yorick, have those little eyes in your skull always been there? I've read tons of your posts and just saw them flash for the first time

How about Shadow Plan vs Bonsai Outliners, Think Office vs, Quick Office, PrintBoy vs PalmPrint,

Launch'em vs Launcher III. (Until recently I would't compare these two. Now that they are both shareware, people will want to know which is better.) Peapole always want to know what the "best" launcher is.

I think these head to heads are a good idea. Not because of the A vs B but because as program develop, they become more and more alike with sublte differences. People will undoubtedly narrow a program choice to two products, then hem & haw over each one. This will, if done right, make the disntinction between two products clearer. That's good.

I think another positive is the discussion that follows these articles.

Pretty much. I think I added them after the first week or so of using that avatar. I was going to do a couple other silly things and mix it up from time to time but never got around to it.

Perhaps the whole King Kong vs. Godzilla thing is a metaphor for the fight between Palm and allies vs. Microsoft and allies. Perhaps King Kong represents Palm/Handspring/Sony/Handera and Godzilla represents Mircosoft/Compaq/HP.

I'd like to see a comparison of the multitudinous (sp?) backup options out there (maybe not including the HS backup mod, which would prob win...). I can't decide if I want to include backup soft with my cf card, because I know so little about the available options.

I'd also like to see a video on a HS article.

How about a Launcher Head to Head?

...Infosync did a pretty good datebook derby and a doc reader derby...

...random thoughts.....

Lightbulb

How about an article on which is the best document format for PalmOS handhelds, and which document viewer is the best? Currently, we have several variations of the DOC format, the Peanut/Palm Book format, a PDF format, and others... and there are a multitude of readers out there as well. A run-down on what's available, what works, and what doesn't would be really useful.

Kopsis Rules

I especially love Kopsis products- I have been with them since the early days & plan to stay with them. Mr. Kessler has one of the best customer care attitudes of any springboard developer I know of. Anyways just my 2 cents. Lately I've been impressed with how MS-Mount now is compatible with VFSHelper whereas last I checked it wasn't with MemPlugVFS.

I would like to see indepth face off of Springboard technology vs SD.

Posted by Anomaly on 09-30-2001 05:39 PM:

I think the key to anything along these lines is a whole-hearted attempt to provide an objective comparison - NOT a "what is the best." The permutations of what people are using and the plethora of different needs, wants and budgets, make picking a "best" choice a myth.

Lightbulb Visor v. Handera

How about a Visor to Handera comparison. Since the Handera is the most expandable Palm OS handheld other than the Visor it would be a good comparison.

My wife had a Visor Deluxe and now an Edge. I had a Palm III and now a Handera so I have seen some of the differences.

For starters, the Visor can use MemPlug to copy the CF port on the Handera and there are springboard modules that allow voice recording.

As the two most innovative Palm licensees, it would be intertesting.
