Anyone had a look inside, I looked at mine, if you look on the inside of the back cover you can see some disc shapes in the metal, when you look on the board there are some shiny contacts that would be in contact with the disc shapes when the unit cover is back on, what are they?

My guess is that they are for shielding purposes. I have seen this same constuction in many consumer electronic devices with metal cases. The disk shapes you describe are likely cutouts in an insulating layer on the inside of the metal case, or they could be raised areas. The spring contacts then make contact with the case in those areas, providing a ground connection between the case and the electronics board.
