I've been calling: 800-278-4685

Posted by erzeszut on 01-19-2001 08:32 PM:

that's the same number I've used...after my local manager was so unhelpful, I called corp HQ again and explained the problem to a different service rep...she took my name, addy, and phone and said they would contact my local manager. I'm hoping that will make the difference.

I also mentioned that I work for IT here at UAB and that my department spends over $10K a year at CompUSA...maybe that will help too....

Make sure you get to the "Overdue Rebate" desk when going through the menu at COMPUSA HQ phone maze.

Posted by erzeszut on 01-19-2001 08:57 PM:

That's a very good suggestion...I didn't do that the first time I called. The second time, I did choose the "overdue rebate" option and got a very knowledgable service rep who most certainly had already heard about this problem dozens of times.

Still waiting to hear back from my local manager...I'll give him another half hour or so before I call and complain again.

For those of you who have gotten the $200 refunds -- do you have to go down to the store in person, or can they process that over the phone??

Talking

Over the phone for me. The GM said he didn't want me to have to come down to the store.

Posted by nmehta211 on 01-19-2001 09:09 PM:

I just contacted my local GM and he said that he was not aware of the rebate not being honored. He then told me if it isn't being honored, he would allow me to return it, but not give me the $200 because Visor is not honoring their deal. Fishy, fishy. Who else can I contact about this?

Posted by mikegold on 01-19-2001 09:27 PM:

I had to go down to the store.

The GM here tried to give me the "It's not a CompUSA rebate, it's a Handspring rebate" argument.

I told him I had already received an email response from Handspring saying that they do not have a $200 rebate and that it was up to CompUSA to honor or not honor it and Handspring would be having nothing to do with it.

Also, I pointed out that if it was a Handspring rebate I would be able to get this rebate no matter where I purchased the product. According to this rebate form the product MUST be purchased at CompUSA.

For all of us who have purchased a Prism expecting to recieve the $200 rebate. If CompUSA decides to not honor the rebate (I highly doubt they won't because it all appears valid) I think I smell a rather large class action for false advertisement. The rebate form clearly states purchase a prism recieve $200 rebate with no other stipulations.

If eight weeks passes and noone recieves their rebate lets all unite and defeat!

Posted by erzeszut on 01-19-2001 11:44 PM:

update...

Just got a call from one of my CompUSA's assistant managers. She said that the store manager had received word from HQ that they are supposed to credit me with $200. (Actually, she said they'll refund the $449, then charge $249).

I do have to go down to the store, however, with receipt and the Prism's box.

I asked her if I need to come by when she or the manager are on duty; she said "all the managers have been talking about it on the phone today" so whoever is on duty should be able to handle the refund.

I'll be heading down there tomorrow AM, and will report on my experience!!

Well, I have already sent in my rebate, and if any of us who havent gotten our rebate. We should voice our dissatisfaction with CompUsa policy and their reputation with maybe legal action. It's appalling that some of us have to go to corporate and then be told to the GM to see if they will honor the rebate in their store! I'm very dismay that a company will do this. I can't base my purchase on the whim of the GM to give me a rebate or not. I will wait my 6-8 weeks to see.

I sent mine in yesterday but still got my refund credit today. Just b/c you sent it doesn't mean you won't get credited now. I am pretty sure that what will happen is that in 6-8 weeks you wont get anything. In fact I believe they probably will send the envelopes back- marked "undeliverable" or "not accepted by addressee". If they actually process my rebate forms and send me a check, then I will have gotten $400... so I think they won't be processing the rebate forms. It looks like we all have to work with the stores. I am pretty sure that as this thing snowballs, all the managers in all the stores will know that they need to credit the money.

BTW- my store's GM just applied 200 back to my CC. I lose the tax advantage of the refund of 449 then repurchase at 249... but I'm not sweatin' those details.

EXPLAIN THIS

All of you who are sure the rebate only applies to the purchase of a Prism with the Omnisky. Click on the Omnisky graphic on the first page of Visor Central's web site. It says the rebate of $200 will be credited to your credit card after *6 months* of continuous paid service. How can that be the same as the coupon rebate that says the $200 rebate will be made by check within 6 to 8 weeks?

I believe COMPUSA may have intended to do this deal in conjunction with Omnisky purchase, but this rebate, in fact, is wholly unrelated to Omnisky. The Omnisky deal always applies from what I've heard.

I found the rebate coupon at the rebate stand at COMPUSA. I went there to get some CD-Rs. I was not drawn in by an "incorrect" ad for an Omnisky/Prism deal. I found a screaming deal on a Prism, there were no stipulations other than purchase a Prism at CompUSA. I bought it.

The GM at my store told me those coupons were supposed to have been pulled, but that the front-end manager had missed them. Because they were available to me and I followed the rules of the deal as outlined on the rebate form, I was credited $200 to my CC. End of story. My UPC code, original rebate form and copy of receipt have been sent to Phoenix, Arizona and to some rebate abyss. If they send me a check, I will have been compensated TWICE for the purchase of one item- a Prism. I doubt they will. I do not have an OMNISKY... but I do have free YADA YADA.

Question

Does anyone have the name of someone at HQ that they have made any progress with in getting the stores to do instant credit. I am in Atlanta and seem to be getting the run around with them saying they will not honor the rebate even if it is sent in?? Any help would be appreciated.

... then ask if they will send a message to your store with your information.

Coupons still there

Went to my local COMP USA today, the promo ends tomorrow and they have stacks of rebate coupons. I asked someone working there if the coupons were valid and he said "wow, I didn't even know about this". They have a bunch is stock. So when my wife comes home tonight I'll see if I can talk her in to getting one

Posted by tayolrmade on 01-20-2001 03:36 AM:

lets start over

Please help. I've read every post and there are many different stories floating. I bought a Prism today and mailed my rebate in. According to the store here, the coupon as far as they know was legit.
What do we know for sure? Is everyone positive that the rebate check will not be sent and if not, who were they told by that its not valid. Someone from CompUSA had to put those rebates in the stores.
For those of you who got instant rebates, what reason did you give for getting one on the spot....do we have a contact at headquarters that will authorize this.
My last question is this, how could they not possibly honor the rebate when it was in every store and sold under that assumption. They don't have a case, do they?
Thanks to all of you for your previous experiences, I rolled the dice today with the assumption that they will eventually honor it. Thanks for your comments.

Posted by prismenvy on 01-20-2001 03:56 AM:

From what we've gathered so far:

1) According to COMPUSA HQ, the rebate coupons are a mistake and were to have been pulled from the stores.

2) According to some posters who called the # on the form, the rebate center noted on the form does not know of the rebate and the dept. listed does not exist.

3) Many stores still have the rebate forms floating around.

4) According to COMPUSA HQ, rebate "should" (quoted because that's what I was told by a cust serv. agent on phone) be honored by the General Manager of the store where purchased. This because the rebate center likely won't be able to honor it (and won't send checks out) because they have no knowledge of it in their computer system.

6) The suggested remedy (suggested by COMPUSA HQ staff and at least the GM for my store) for affected purchasers is to get $200 credited to cc-- or refund the $449 and re-sell the Prism for $249.

7) Some people are having success getting the GM to credit the difference, others are not-- most likely because the issue is just starting to get the attention of GMs and they haven't heard from HQ. I got the help of COMPUSA HQ who emailed my GM with my details. I then called him and he called back and credited my cc over the phone. I had already sent my rebate material in to Phoenix, AZ-- so I do not really have a "returnable" product (no UPC)

8) For the most part, in my eyes and those of most VC posters on this board, this rebate is legal and binding on COMPUSA as long as purchasers fit the eligibility parameters as detailed on the original rebate form obtained from a COMPUSA store.

Resolution!

OK, I got my rebate!

After hearing about everyone contacting CompUSA's HQ and basically confirming that the rebate deal was made by mistake, I drove down to CompUSA (Salt Lake City), and asked to see the GM.

I told the assistant GM the whole story (I heard about the rebate; came to the store and was told the rebate was valid; purchased the unit on Monday and mailed my rebate form on Tuesday; then heard stories about the rebate maybe not being honored.)

The assistant GM said they found out about the mistake today and pulled the remaining forms. He promised the rebate would be honored. When I told him the rebate would not be honored by the rebate company, he went back into the mirrored room to pow-wow with the GM. He came back out 30 seconds later and told me that I would receive an immediate $200 credit. I showed my receipt, and they credited the entire purchase price back to me. Then, they gave me the Prism for $249 ($449 minus $200 credit).

Whahoo! Give CompUSA some credit. They made me a deal, I accepted, and then they made good on their promise despite their mistake.

I suggest that everyone who was in my situation immediately go to CompUSA and work it out now. Tell the GM that others are getting immediate credits. No reason to wait for 6-8 weeks to confirm that the rebate won't come.

I'm happy, and I'm happy with CompUSA's quick and friendly response. If I happen to get a rebate check (which I doubt I will), I will sign it over to CompUSA. For now, I think I'll go try some new color games. :-)
