-- do u really need OS 4? (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=15849)

offen i do come across customer that tells me that palm can offers thems an OS 4 while Handspring cannot.
The truth is, (believe that most of u here have alreadly seen OS 4) do u really need it ?

Is OS 4 really that inportant or is it a normal human reaction where by that they always want sto have the best of all even though that they dun even know much about it ?

Cool

I really need it. You may not.

The changes and additions from version to version are incremental. If a new feature is something that makes your life easier, than you need the update.

The older the version that you are currently using, the more chance that the latest version will have something that you need.

Personally, I can't stand to use my Visor Deluxe anymore because of so many things missing from the OS (v3.1).

The Prism is not too bad currently (except for being a brick, and an OS upgrade ain't gonna fix that), but that could change as more apps come out that use OS4 specific features.

Look at the feature set and decide for yourself. None of us can help you since you are the person that has to use the device.

I need it to support 16-bit color on the CLIE!

NOPE.

My Prism has 3.5 and it has 16bit color. Dunno why Sony doesn't have it in theirs. Besides I played ith a M505 for a week and didn't find out what was the big deal with 4.0.

Sony is a licensee of the PalmOS, but doesn't get the added features of other licensees until they get the updated PalmOS, i.e. 4.0. HS's 3.5 is modified to include 16 bit. Since Sony decided against 4.0 (presumably to get the Clie out faster), they either had to stick with fewer colors or develop their own 16bit color. Can the OS in the Clie be upgraded? If so, they made the right decision b/c it will become a 16 bit device as soon as they can get 4.0 on it!

Because HandSpring developed the 16-bit support (for the Prism), and turned it over to Palm for inclusion in the base OS (as per their license agreement). Palm is including it as part of the OS 4 feature set.

If Sony wanted to reengineer it from scratch, they could. Or they can wait a month or two and get the base support for free (well not really free since they are paying license fees). Of course Sony will still have to hook the APIs to their hardware, but that is relatively trivial.

BTW - this why Palm waited until OS 4 was ready before shipping the m505 (with 16-bit color).

Yes, the Clie uses flash for the OS.

Maybe they should've waited until their suppliers had the parts!

I think that I do really need os4 because of its built-in VFS. If I wanted a color device besides a HS device, I'd want it too...

I just hope the forthcoming VFS from kopsis pans out well... then I won't need os4.
