Matty,

The links you provided are for a GSM/GPS springboard. Rob's link is to a cell phone. Don't these involve different kinds of services?

I'm not sure if you can use the GSM/GPS for voice too, is so they can do the same stuff, only the GSM/GPS can do additional stuff too....

looks like a very interesting springboard

A couple of things that suck about GSM though. GSM seems to only be on the east coast here in the US and the data rate is only 9600. Great for short email, but that's about it. At least SprintPCS offers 14.4.

from the developers site (link #1 in my post aqbove):
GSM
The GSM part of the module is designed in dual-band capable technique and allows people to utilize either E-GSM or DCS GSM ETSI Phase I and II services. The available headset provides the telephony GSM teleservice, which is compatible to any standard mobile headset equipment. Along with regular GSM functionality, other teleservices provided are SMS for point-to-point mobile terminated, mobile originated and cell broadcast short messages. The GSM data transfer is capable of sending and receiving data up to 14.400 bits per second. The GSM software, which is also available from Tel@markt, running the Try@COM module, is Version 07.05 and 07.07 compatible. The internal SIM card reader supports 3 and 5V compatible standard mini SIM-cards.

Well, I stand corrected. I was under the impression that it was 9600.

If you have the right phone and software, you can link to it via the infrared port.

you weren't completely wrong. The current GSM system only supports 9600 baud data... but the sound quality is a lot better...

Also worldwide it is the most used system. I think the US is one of the few countries that has low coverage for GSM.
If you have a dual- or tri-band GSM phone you can use it allmost anywhere...
