-- Palm vs. Visor, revisited (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=54)
Some of you in this forum may be interested in the following offer for the Palm V from Beyond.com: http://www.beyond.com/PKIN794452/prod.htm
They are selling the Palm V for $300, after a $100 rebate. Besides its sleek design, the Palm V is almost half as thick as the Visor.
On a related topic: Anyone have any comments regarding the feasibility of offering a wireless Internet connectivity as a springboard module to make the Visor like the Palm VII?
I asked this in another topic, but didn't receive a response.
There are two issues re: Visor vs. Palm VII.
1. Wireless connectivity: I have seen reports about a wireless modem for the springboard. The technology exists, it just takes someone to make it. If it is Glenayre or Novatel or someone else, who knows. I am sure (in my own mind, without true HARD data to back it up) that there will be a wireless springboard out before the start of the second quarter in '00.
2. Internet Service: Presently the VII connects to 3COm as your ISP and proxies all PQA (Palm Querry Apps) through thier firewall. I am not sure if you can hit this any other way. I am also not sure if the PQA's will work on anything other than a VII (my guess is that they don't, yet.) I have speculated that a HackMaster hack could intercept PQA requests and re-direct them through a wireless modem. However, 3Com also announced a partnership with (I can't remember, but search their web site for a press release if you care) called Open Sky to provide a wireless ISP for Palm OS based devices. This should offer PQA's as well as full internet access for browsing or pop mail access. Open Sky is suppoed to be launched by the end of first quarter 2000.
I just saw that offer and came over to my favorite site of the month to throw out a similar question. I'm definitely getting a Visor Deluxe, but for my wife, she may prefer the slimness of the V. That price is really making me think twice.
I've got news for both of you. The Palm V can now be purchased for $237 (plus s/h). Send it to Hong Kong and have 12 megs added for $120. Then you'll have the slickets Palm out there WITH mega memory, but.......you will also miss out on the Springboard technology. I guess it really is a question of form or function. I think the Visor lacks some form, but has plenty of function (and big RAM). OTH, Palm V has form and function but lacks said big RAM. If the Palm V were able to be purchased in the sub-200 range, I might cancel my Visor order and go with the Palm V instead.
Solo,
Where's the offer for $237. also, I read that article about the 12 meg upgrade, but I wonder how they do it because I heard that the processor will only address up to 8megs. If anyone out there knows, please advise. Thanks
Hawk
Hawk: Sorry, I was at the gym and just got my computer online. I saw an ad somewhere in here (VS) and went to it. Something like buy.com, shop.com or the like. The price was unbelieveable (in fact, there were two merchants selling them for that price). I'll look some more and see if I can't find it again.
Update: I called Beyond.com and spoke to a corporate head named Peter. He said the rebate was from Beyond.com and not 3Com. He also stated he would not price match the other nine companies selling the Palm V for $350 or less. His position was $399.99 - a hundred bucks was the best price. Um, I guess when 3Com offers the rebate in a few weeks, he'll feel pretty stupid for losing a sale to me today.

I think that $237 for a Palm V was an error. There was a note about the $100 rebate and someone else found a $337 price, so they claimed $237 ... but the rebate is only from Beyond.com and they have the Palm V listed at $399 (so $299).
Shopper.com does have a low-price list, but the lowest price they have on there is $336 at this time.
If you could have talked him down to $350 and then taken the $100 rebate from Beyond ... you're close, though.
... but I haven't seen any mention of a $100 rebate from Palm themselves.
