killer modules-what killer Visor?

With existing modules...and the vapormods to come...hopefully, has anyone talked about life with the Visor WITHOUT having to sync?

Can you read email attachments w/o syncing or conversion from the desktop? Can you fax, do email, view .jpg images as attachments, view .tif fax documents as email attachments, all without going to the PC first and translating them with the requisite hotsync to put it in the visor?

How about a module that allows you to plug in more than one module? and switch between the two without losing the state of the other one?

I know the PalmOS isn't multi=threaded...but perhaps with a module you can play a few tricks...such as having a wireless phone modem with the firmware embedded for storing and reading documents received via email...or flash memory that doesn't have to be loaded into main mem?

Yes, I know I'm asking for the Swiss army knife module...but what if??

After some careful detective work, I found the original annoucement for the Visorphone from Handspring's partner in the deal:

When I emailed them they told me they forwarded my request

2 modules i'd really kill for:

TV Module
It's the tuner part of a portable TV, and it uses the (Prism's) screen to display the signal. Perhaps even a thumbnail version that floats above other apps?

Multimodule - weather center/survival module
Weather band or shortwave radio, compass, thermometer, barometer, wind direction, flashlight.

Why killer?

I don't understand the "killer module" concept as it applies to VC readers. As I think of it, "killer" is used to mean whatever would rocket the product from obscurity to must-have status. It's usually people marketing something that are worried about finding a killer app, not people buying it.

Do people want a killer module because they don't get enough of the cool factor from their Handspring?

Maybe I just don't get it because my Visor already does what I need/want it to:

- read ebooks & AvantGo
- replace a paper planner/address book
- play games once in a while
- backup my data reliably to module or PC
- let me check my email or enter notes on the road
- carry family photos

Am I missing something with this whole killer module idea?

Still, what they say (and how, when, where and under what circumstances) is a large -- and in key instances a profoundly important part -- of what they do.

More on topic, I'll stay w/my long-time assertion that most dev. still don't utilize the key component of a PDA -- the screen -- enough.
Why get an MP3 player in a PDA unless the readout(s) / grapics on the screen BURY any other MP3 player? (Esp. if it's a few more oz.)
Ditto GPS.
Ditto the "probe"-type SBs.
Ditto a radio (AM/FM or both), if we ever get one.
Ditto a scanner.
Ditto, etc.

Just got a mail from Option (the partner of Handspring to create the VisorPhone) that Handspring's plans still are to release the European VisorPhone at the end of June. Gonna send it to the VC redaction, maybe they can do something with it :-)

Yeah, I've thought this too. As always, I'm still a big supporter of all of the mem. expansion SBs, and Kopsis & Kessler will always be "the father of these SBs," but I can see, esp. new and/or novice and/or non-power-users, looking to MemPlug currently for this reason.

I would like to humbly take issue with the tone of this article. I am (and of course this is personal / subjective) somewhat tired of what I perceive to be a narcissism and insatiability on the part of the editorial staff of this site.

Okay, I know that was inflammatory, but hear me out. This site is the best Visor specific site on the web. I read it every day via my computer or via Avantgo.

There is only one thing I dislike about the site, and that is this "what have you done for me lately" attitude. That very expression is commonly used in our parlance to express a very selfish attitude. People who express such an attitude in relationships are not exactly admired for doing so. In short, it's not a virtue.

I may be way out of step, but it would serve my purposes to hear about how to utilize what Visor resources are out there, not to hear about why my life is incomplete cause I don't have a wireless Ethernet toaster remote control.

In my opinion, the VisorPhone is THE killer module. I now own several modules including Memory Access, GPS Companion, SoundsGood, Backup, Memplug,Xircom Springport, Dictionary, Bible, & maybe one or two that I forgot, but the VisorPhone trumps all of them!

Recently, I have been thinking about a killer module. One idea I had was something similar to the 8 meg flash modules with a really nice e-book interface & the ability to download book files which can only be read on the module. The reader included with the dictionary & bible is adequate, but could be so much more. I would be willing to pay a paperback price for selected fiction & non-fiction titles.

The other one I thought about would be a Visorphone with GPS capabilities.

For right now though, I am really happy with my pile of modules, especially since I am wireless now. The V-phone takes the Visor to a new level of functionality!

Actually, "bootlegging" concerts is illegal, but this is nearly impossible to enforce, esspecially with a portable recording device. Actually, portable MiniDisk recorders are quite amazing. Their sound is even closer to CD quality than the mp3 format and can now have tremendous recording capacities with MDLP or MiniDisk Long Play. I would certainly not mind having only one device though.

As a musician, what I am interested in (although it will never happen) is a portable accompanist. Coda Music has "Smart Music Studio" software for the PC and Mac that simulates an accompanist quite well. In studying music being able to understand how ones part works with others is essential, and it would prove greatly beneficial to have that capacity anywhere, anytime.

I agree. Visor does need more killer modules. A tv springboard module would be really cool. Imagine being able to catch you favorate tv shows while you're waiting in line at the bank or waiting to catch a plane. It would also be superb to add flash memory cards that could record your tv shows (from video or dvd) and then replay them later. There would be so many workplace and personal uses for this module.
