Hi Folks:

I've had my GVDx since November and it works great. However everynow and then I get the following error:

MemoryMgrNew.c,
Line: 4128, Invalid handle

Reset

The Visor locks up and I have to do a soft reset (fortunately no hard resets yet) to get the Visor back.

There does not appear to be any rhyme or reason as to when this error occurs. I can go for months without one or it could happen three times in five minutes. It also appears to be application independent in that it has occured during the operation of numerious applications.

Some vitial statistics:

Free Memory: 5299K of 7936K
Palm OS(tm) Software v.3.1
Update 3.0.2 v.12
USB Library v.3.0H
LdbMgr Library v.3.0H

Anyone have any idea as to what could be going on or how to fix it?

TIA
Jerry

Do you have HackMaster installed? I've found that on every 13th or 14th load of Hackmaster it gets this type of error.

Hi Jay:

I sure do have HackMaster installed.

Unfortunately, I can not uninstall it since I have a couple of programs, that I use all the time, that rely on hacks.

Thanks for the insight.

Can't remember where I saw this, but there is apparently a "bug" in HackMaster that causes it to trigger an error at every 15th invocation of (any particular???) Hack. Has something to do with the way HackMaster and/or the PalmOS "locks" databases. I believe this is a problem on Palm devices as well, not just the Visor.

Lightbulb

As far as I know, you can avoid this problem by doing a soft-reset after you launched HackMaster 10 times or so. I think this sets the "counter" of Hackmaster back to zero.

As a soft-reset creates some additional shortcuts (I don't know why), you should get a small (free) app called dbscan that you can use to get rid of these additional shortcuts. You should be able to find that prog at palmgear.com or another palm software site.

This is apparently a "feature" of the PalmOS. I remember reading that it's been around for awhile... since ver 1.0 or something like that.

I also don't think launching HackMaster itself causes the error... it's launching a specific Hack from within HM that magic 15 times (actually, the 16th launch?) that does it (or at least that's the way I understand it to be).

The soft reset advice is good (there's currently no alternative), but it's something that I think (just my opinion) shouldn't need to be done.

Just one of those famous idiosyncracies of computing I reckon

here's something interesting...

i got the same error message today (for the first time and that's why this thread kinda drew my attention) and i don't have any hacks or hackmaster installed.

It did, however, occur when i upgraded my Silverscreen to 1.4 another strange thing that occured, i had 2 MobileDBLite apps appearing on the screen and when i went to delete one of them the error came up. After a soft reset everything went back to normal but now BOTH MobileDBLites were gone! I re-installed and everything seems a-ok.

just thought i'd let you all know that it might not be the hacks.

I got this same error today and tried to do a soft reset. The PALM intial screen just flashed on and off at a bout a 10 second interval. I had to do a hard reset. I have no hacks installed. This has happened before twice. It seems random. Today I was opening my address book. Ideas?

JerryLCox-
Just curious: You're using Update 3.0.2? Is it doing anything beneficial? (I didn't think it would do anything at all for OS 3.1, but since it had to do with power management with IR receive off in OS 3.0, and Visors seem to need help with power management (sssuuucckk!!), what the heck...)

Tom LaPrise-

That's asking me to remember back to Novemeber when I got my Visor. I can hardly remember yesterday or is that today . Hey that's one of the reason I bought the Visor.

Anyway, as I recall after I installed the Visor software on my NT laptop I noticed there was an upgrade/update directory. In it was the update 3.0.2 so I installed it.
