Okeydoke. I presume each state's marriage and rape laws would be in sync (I hope!). I think it's 17 in New York.
There was a recent case of two high-school students who were married before they were 18, yet she became pregnant after he turned 18 and she was still 17; the wrong person learned of this and he went to jail, even though he is the girl's husband and they entered into the legal contract of marriage.

Sounds a little too close to fascism for me.

yes, valid, but a vehicle is a man-made construct, as is a gun, marriage, and fishing. No-one invented reproduction. Pretty much anyone can do it, and they don't need access to special equipment (most of the time).
I guess my real objection is making it mandatory only for those under a certain age. I think many, many parents could use this information, but how do you enforce it?

I'm aware that some high school systems have parenting and homemaking classes but I don't think it's ever turned up in an adult-education program. I guess if our educational system had more funds available we could as a society turn out better people who are less likely to murder their neighbors. (in the global sense, I mean.)

Maybe during the fraternal grandmother's time it was easier than today to raise a child at 16, maybe they were more educated then (didn't they learn Latin & calculus in high school back then, etc?); maybe not. Perhaps she was just a shining individual. But to make laws / broad policy its prob. more wise to do a statistical sampling.

It's not your ignorance. I don't think it's presently law ANYwhere to prevent ANYone from having sex AS YOUNG AS THEY LIKE -- that's the prob! Even on the talk shows where the try to "shame" the 13-yr. old "couple" into "admitting they made a mistake" having kids so young ... there never seems to be any legal consequence! It's just: "Okay, man -- that was a good show; good luck to you two raising them kids w/no education and no jobs."

Once more, tho, I'd RATHER NOT have society "put to the test" of whether or not kids should be jailed for having kids -- in the old days, the family, the clergy, the neighborhood, etc. was enough influence. But now, "in the era of no shame" (I think that's tomorrow's "Jerry Springer" topic, actually) it's "go ahead and do it."

Maybe 6 mo. of jail time would be more appropriate.

undoubtedly. The "school year" hasn't changed a whit in at least fifty years (that I know of) and there's a lot more information kids need to learn before they can go off to get jobs.

ehhh ... modern TV talk shows are a sticking point with me. They create a particular and unreal environment where it's less about the discussion and more about the confrontation.

I'm leaning towards house arrest instead of jail. (Even considering your idealized jail.) I mean, it's not as if they did something really wrong, like taking another's property or life. They brought a life into the world.

I agree that it's interesting that you have to have a license to drive a car but not to have a baby. I know several people that should never have had kids, but whaddya do?

I wish that states included some form of family classes before people could get their marriage license. That wouldn't cover teen/unmarried pregnancies, but it's a start.
