Edge Report in Japan

Hmm... Visors are even cheaper here in Osaka, Japan. I just went to a electronics department and the Edge was given quite a prominent display out of all the Palm PDAs they have on sale. They had the Edge in all three colours on each Palm PDA stand, along with the Prism and Sony 750C.

It seems the Edge is positioned as a sleek looking low end handheld over here. In fact it's only, US$160 here with the Prism being sold at UA$230. For that price it sure as hell beats the m500 which is about $300 if I'm not wrong. The newer models were not for sale (ie the Neo and Pro).

I also found a really nice leather/transparent screen protector for the Edge. Wasn't expecting any accessories for the Edge in fact. This one is quite nice if you don't like the metal flip cover of the Edge and don't like those sticky screen protectors. The plastic is clear and works well.

Compared to the PPC and other PDA models here, it's understandble why Sony had to pack so many features and improve really quickly. A b/w screen looks so out of date if you want to sell handhelds at the prices HS are selling theirs in the US.

Anyways.. It's always "interesting" to see that Visors including my once high-end Edge, 5 months down the track are now positioned as very good low-end PDAs here.

Also to anybody making a case against MP3s built-it, with memory add cards like the SD and Memory Stick becoming cheaper with 128mb and 256mb capacities, I sure would like the ability to play & record MP3s and Wav files on my slim PDA with all that memory. There should not be any need for Voice recording modules in the near future in my book.

Handspring at least has made the right decision (slash the prices) on the Edge over here. With the T600C clie coming out in a few weeks, the M505 at about $450 here, looks really really overpriced. I don't expect Palm to push many of them over here. Out of the models on display, the Edge might do quite well as a replacement for the Vdx over here especialloy if we can get a cdma adapter for the phone like the Clies.
