This is what happened. the light turned yelllow, and didn't think i could stop the car in time, so i chose to try and beat it.
just as i enter the intersection(light is yellow), blue car (who is already in the intersection waiting to tun, starts moving.
i swerve to avoid, aver correct and sideswipe the red van. I then bounce off, possibly now with my foot accidentally ont eh accellerator insead to the brake, and smah into the curb, taking out my 2 passenger side wheels. blue car drives off.
i got an appointement with the adjuster tomorrow. teh insurance person on the phone tonight said if i cant prove there was a left turner in the intersection, I will be screwed for the cost of repairs to BTH cars. I think the witnesses and the van's driver will be able to back me up tho.
Of course, this is not my car even. its my dad's friend's. he lent it to me over the summer while he's gone on vacation. he has no comprehensive, so I will have to pay for the car i was driving no matter what. I can afford that.
if I have to pay for the other guy's van, i will be ****ed. royally and completely.
no one was hurt, but could i change it, i would certainly rather I get hurt than that other guys' van. afterall, medicare pays for my broken bones... which, incidentally, fix themselves in the end.

Oh Oh
Good to hear that everyone is OK. This really blows.
Now how are you going to get that "muscle" car you wanted?

It looks like you're driving around with the doughnut spare.
Anyways, I hope everything will be worked out.
If no choice - better pay for the van first and get a delayed payment on your dad's friend's car since well, you know, it's a friend.

ima go buy some used wheels shortly. my dad doesn't think there's any frame damage.

You haven't told us if the insurance thing worked out or not.

This comic of yours is looking rather ironic now.

Your pictures are down which is unfortunate because I would've liked to see if I could recognize where the accident was...

Not to sure about B.C.
Well - glad no one was hurt except some pride. I would imagine given the circumstances that a reoccurence of similar events and you would "slam" on the brakes and let the guy behind you crunch the rear end of your vehicle.
In California, at least, you are protected by the traffic laws that anyone that runs into the back of you is at fault especially if you are trying to stop at a signal.
A friend of my daughter's is still in the hospital after two weeks because of an accelerator through the intersection well after the light had changed....even the camera withnessed nearly two seconds of red light. I'm not saying it happend here but remember this - a street legal vehicle always has more braking power then horsepower.

if i had slammed on the brakes, I would have ended up halfway in the intersection. i wouldnt have hit the left hand turner though.

Hindsight
Hindsight is better then foresight in almost all situations. I did not mean to imply any wrong doing on your part. As long as the light was yellow, you are legal.
In the case I sighted - that person wasn't.
There was a very good expose done on The Discovery Channel the other day that talked about having roundabounts at all major intersections. The accident that you described couldn't have happened and traffic actually flows better at these types of interchanges albeit slower. However it does prevent "running a red light".
With all of our technology and improvements in engine controls and emissions out of the tail pipes of our automobiles - we still haven't made significant improvements in accident prevention. We are treating the symptom with air bags and anti-lock brakes. We have not initiated enough safety measurements for the prevention of accidents.
Accident is really not a correct term: Nearly all accidents involving humans behind the wheel are preventable by one of the involved parties. The only exception is a mechanical failure of some type that is unforseen or unimaginable by the involved parties.
In your case Thorin, it appears that the left turner was partially if not entirely at fault since they started turning before it was safe to do so. Had you hit the brakes and stopped mid-way in the intersection and the left turner then hit you - you would clearly not be at fault. Now you are dependent upon a witness, which by all accounts human beings typically don't make good witnesses.
The end result is you are suffering the pain of an accident, albeit mental anguish and the financial responsibilty of it. So sad! Perhaps all could have been avoided with current technology being used to help make our streets safer rather than being used in warfare.
Oh well - beam me up Scotty!

Hey Thorin
This is off-topic but then that's the point of this forum....
I didn't notice your comic until just now. Went over to see it, it's actually quite good (need work on some images - just make them clearer) Do you draw it for a local newspaper or something?

where i'm from, this is not so. i assume it's similar where thorin is. you are not allowed to increase speed to make it thru a yellow.
thorin said he "tried to beat it" which to me meant he increased his speed.
thorin, i'm not trying to be a stick in the mud, but weren't you the guy who posted a few months back bragging about how fast you were going in your car (and bemoaning the fact you got a ticket for it)? i'm glad no one was hurt, but i can't say i'm surprised.
my advice, though you didn't ask for it, is screw the musclecar. get yourself a crappy car and invest in some driving lessons before you end up dead.

I wont deny that i suck at driving(i thought of having a big vinyl windshield banner made up of that).
bad idea ... if you're ever in another accident, the other driver will see that and say, "he admits he's a lousy driver! he's at fault!"
I've only been really doing it for three months,
three months PERIOD
or three months since licensed?
As for that ticket thing, again, Well, everybody likes to go fast. and I learned my lesson. I make a point to NEVER be the fastest car in the lane anymore.
people going too fast don't bother me so much as the people who have to be the lead dog at all costs. (okay, I have issues. but the guy cut me off, dammit!)
and hell, nobody likes to take responsibility for their actions.
not really relevant to this thread, but this is exactly what's wrong with the world.

Than you. no, i dont draw for any newspaper. I plan to put in the university paper when I go back to school this fall... I want to continue it, but lately i just dont care much about anything. maybe the insurance co will come back and vindicate me(ie, not fine me into the ground), and i will come back newly inspired with a mustang.
