I know the Visor Platinum is new, and many of the visitors here are chatting it up like crazy. My question for you is, why would you pay $50 more for a Visor Platinum device over a Visor Deluxe? Here are the benefits as I see them:

Visor Platinum
- The Latest Version of Palm OS (3.5.2H)
- 50% Faster Device

Visor Deluxe
- $50 Cheaper
- 5 Color Options

...Basically you are getting a new Operating System, and a slightly faster unit. Most Palm OS software is lightning fast as it is, so the speed isn't a huge benefit. Is all this worth $50 and the loss of color casing?

Add 16-level grayscale to the list of pros for the Platinum (Yes, it's part of OS 3.5, but it's worth mentioning.) The difference in image quality as compared to Visor/Visor Deluxe 4-level grayscale is night and day... not a big deal to some people, but the more I play with images on my Visor Deluxe, the more frustrated I'm getting.

I'm holding out for a Prism, though, now that I know it will work with my Stowaway.

Again re: OS 3.5... don't forget the more complete infrared support for the truly mobile user. This will work with the Visor Deluxe with 3rd party software but it's always nice to have it built-in (no extra software costs and potentially better application support). The extra speed is a nice bonus, but not the main selling point of the Platinum in my view.

My current PDA recommendation of choice to friends is one of the two, depending on their needs. However, they still go and order the Prism. :P

Well, not to put too fine a point on it, but in my book, a 50% improvement is a whole lot more that "slightly".

With my flash ram springboard, I've got so many apps on my Visor that it takes about half a minute for the Delete dialog to pop up. There are other places where my large number of apps and docs result in a performance slowdown.

A 50% increase in performance would be quite welcome.

If I were buying a new Handspring device today, it'd be a Platinum (although I'm not too crazy about the light grey color).

The Prism seems to expensive to me. I haven't seen a Prism yet, but I wasn't all that impressed with the Palm IIIc that I saw at Best Buy.

I've run into several apps that wouldn't work at all on an OS less than 3.5. Nothing I can't live without, but it might be nice to have.

I doubt I'll buy a Platinum anytime soon though. There just isn't enough difference between my Graphite Visor Deluxe and the Platinum for me to justify spending that much money.

Ummm....I did. No regrets yet except for all the hoopla over the Prism, but I'll know more as I use it. It definately DOES respond faster and I just finished syncing and populating the Platnium. Again, time will tell, the only thing I have noticed so far is my pistures for ONLY ME aren't appearing. Probably just needs a tweek.

Don't forget the Color

Don't forget the nice silver colour of the platinum. It is elegant and solid and will be a nice replacement for my Ice Visor Deluxe.

Oh, I had that as a negative . I think the 5 color options for the Visor Deluxe should be mirrored for the Platinum. They could keep the back of the device silver, but provide color options for the front of the device.

Yeah, I was hoping for some colour options for the Platinum too - mebbe some new translucent colours.

The cheesy silver (IMHO) colour was what decided me against it and for the Prism instead, which has at least a nice Bluish colour.

I would welcome the faster processor and OS upgrade, but I think that the painted case is a bad idea. I use the Handspring plastic belt clip case, and love the convenience, but the sliding wore the paint off the middle of the arrow keys. Now imagine what it would look like if the paint was worn from the front, sides, and edges of the backo ot the Platinum. Very shabby I expect. A graphite Platinum (or another more platinum-ish color that doesn't need a coat of paint) would be much better from a durability standpoint.

Actually it's both. Silver painted silver plastic. You can see this by looking at the sides of the battery cover, and the dummy Springboard.

I for one am blown away by the fact that only HALF of the users who voted on the VisorMeter thing on the front page on my website are keeping thier old Visor. Not that this is a bad thing but I was just suprised that that many people consider colour/lithium batteries that important. I think that both of those are great ideas but just not worth buying a complete new machine that cannot be more than a year old. There are other bonuses I know with the two new units but I would think those are the major two. The speed is much improved apparently but waiting for Datebk4 to boot up on my Vdx doesn't add alot of time to my day. I guess that just tells ya how 'on the bleeding edge' us PDA users are in general eh?

When I saw the VisorMeter results to date I made two assumsions. First of all I assumed that all users are currently owners of a Visor, and second of all that those who voted for either the Prism or the Platinum are actually replacing thier unit and just not saying that "If I were going to replace my Visor this is what I'd get.". At the time of this post the polls had 738 participants.
