I have defected to Sony, but I agree with you that a non-replaceable battery is a major issue for a lot of people. Friends who are on the road (particularly those travelling in Asia) swear they will never buy a rechargeable PDA, because they've been in too many situations where they were in lower-power situations with no place to recharge (thus potentially losing their data).

I recharge my Clie every night, and don't travel enough, or use enough power, to put myself in danger. However, I could see it happening with others, particularly given the T615C's relatively short battery life.

Wow thanks for that heads up!! You say the Sony has relatively short battery life? Much more so than my Prism?

Need further investigation then before committing to the Clie.

The Clie T615C is reported to have a short battery life when compared to the various color Palm units (though less so for the m505, and it's pretty close for the m515) -- mostly because the backlight is on consistently. The battery life on the Clie N760C (which appears to be close to extinction) has a much better battery life.

I haven't heard any reports of battery life on the new NR-series Clies coming out in Japan yet. (These will almost certainly be released in the US, and replace the N760C mentioned above). However, as their size is similar to the T-Series, and they have the added draw on their power of a 66Mhz processor (twice as fast as the other Clies, which usually means a significant draw on the batteries) and a built-in MP3 player (and a camera on some models)....

Well, you start to wonder where the power's coming from.

If this is an issue for you, I'd investigate battery life for the T-Series and the NR-series. The outgoing N760C has pretty good battery life, apparently, and they're going for cheap as various chains liquidiate their stock.

I have been seriously looking at replacing... or even complimenting, my Pro with a T615. I was messing with one at a store and didn't have any trouble turning the light off. I think I even went into the general prefs menu and set it to have the light off when the unit is turned on... I think there was an option to have the light on when the unit is turned on.
So are you saying that the light does not ever actually turn off? I'm a little confused.

My apologies for the confusion. No, the backlight on the T615C can definitely be turned off.

However, the default setting is on, because to use it indoors, the light needs to be on to some degree. Well, maybe if you were working in a greenhouse, you could leave it off; but I'm hard pressed to see using it indoors without the light on.

I've run it with good readability with the brightness setting set to half-power, and that does save power. With it on full power, you can almost use it as a flashlight -- it's a bright screen.
