Huh. Neat.

It's basically a Firewire HD with MP3 decoding software. I was wondering when someone was going to figure that out.

5mb seems a little low. They should allow for removeable drives. How would this connect to my car stereo? (I really wish they'd start using Firewire ports on all Audio/Visual components).

Anyone know the cost?

Jobs is still demoing the iPod right now. Pricing hasn't been announced yet, nor has availability. I still don't know whether its PC compatible or not! Arg!

Go here to see the iPod in action (including the use of the 'scroll pad'/jog wheel on the front):

Unhappy

Apple shot itself in the foot...again! The iPod is indeed Mac compatible only. PC users (95% of the computer market) are sh!t out of luck.

Say hello to G4 Cube part duex.

I'm kissing the minijam goodbye.

All the music I listen to can go on this. Get a tape adaptor and I don't need to buy a cd player for my car - and there's a little slot under the tape player for a couple of tapes that the ipod could sit in. $399? How much for a cd player for my car? How much to put 5GB into my minijam?

Besides, the minijam wouldn't work with my Cli 415 anyway.

For now. Firewire isn't platform specific - and the software will get written, if not by Apple, then someone else.

$399 for a small 5gb firewire drive with a headphone jack?

$199...maybe...$399...no way.

Too bad.

Foo...what makes it mac only? The only thing I could think of is that you'd loose some itunes interoperability, but you still should be able to interface with it via Firewire, right?

Cube 2 indeed! What were they thinking? I'm certainly not going to pay $400 for an MP3 player, no matter how small it is or how many songs it can play. Sure it has uses for some people, but they advertise it with the iBook (an exceptionally priced product), what iBook owner is going to spend 1/3 of the price they paid for their laptop for an MP3 player? Not to mention we are talking about teenagers and college students who make up the majority of the target crowd (or at least they should).

I loved the Cube and I think the iPod is a terrific device, but very few people are going to buy it at that price.

It's kind of funny that they're advertising it next to the iBook. Isn't the iBook already an MP3 player?

I still think someone needs to come out with a small battery pack/mp3 decoder that you can hook up to a firewire drive. That's be the best of both worlds.

Nope. According to Apple's site, the iPod requires a Mac running OS 9 or X. Someone said that Jobs mentioned "considering" Windows support in the future. I won't hold my breathe.

I was all excited about this product announcement, especially since I was planning on ebaying my Rio 600 soon. When the Apple store went back up, I was ready with my credit card. Then I had the bucket kicked out from under me when I discovered iPod is Mac only. And the $400 pricetag was a kick in the groin as well.

In my opinion, Apple should have offered 2 different MP3 players...a $129 flash memory based device, like a Rio (for the entry level student)....as well as the hard drive based iPod (for the high-end user). As you correctly observed, Lennonhead, this product will have a small market.

Thumbs up

I'm thinking about getting my wife one of these for Christmas. She doesn't have a Mac (yet) but she can use my PowerBook for now.

For those complaining about the price, this is the hard drive that the iPod is using. It's like getting MP3 capabilities for free. Apple must be getting a hell of a deal from Toshiba on these things.

I wonder if PC users that have Firewire can mount the iPod then copy files manually over to it? Better than nothing.

I don't think its that easy, in this case. Even if you could get the PC to see the iPod as an external HD, the iPod may not be able to see the MP3s once they have been brought over from the PC. Apple may have built in some kind of cooky protocol that requires music to be transferred via iTunes. In that case, your music would appear as gibberish data files to iPod, making the iPod a nice paperweight for PC users. Cool as hell for Mac users.

Damn you to hell Steve Jobs!!!!

Right. I was talking about the amount of storage space!

400 smackers? Dang, skippy. Make it with a cheaper, yet replaceable, storage size?

Arrow price

The Creative Jukebox at Amazon is $230 for 6 GB (probably cheaper elsewhere). The Archos Jukebox is $350 for 20 GB.

iPod=typical Apple overpricing.

Them are big puppies, though, and lack firewire..

still.. I don't have the scratch for a new laptop (& it would be a mac), much less this!
