Good Point!! Regardless of warnings against the procedure, you know that if it's possible people are going to attempt it.

Good point yes, but I don't think it is possible to flash an OS for a Palm unit into a non-Palm unit. I have never read any postings anywhere nor heard any stories about people flashing a Palm OS upgrade into there TRG Pro or Sony Clie and having it work, yet disabling some of the special features of the device such as the CF slot in the TRG and jog dial in the Sony.

So I don't think that is a real reason why Handspring is not offering Flash ROM on their units.

INSTEAD of putting R&D into the OS, there making there lisences devleop everything, and than they include that in there codebase.

Palm needs help. There hardware sucks, and it's just not working. There OS has no improvements in it. WHEN!?!?! will things get better?

Dude, chill out. And remember, posts are better when they're accurate.

Windows gets more and more bloated with each incarnation. Yes, there are improvements in each of the new version, but newer and better hardware is required with each iteration. I don't want to get drawn into a Windows debate, but Palm has certainly taken a different path. Simplicity is a great philosophy and Palm hasn't strayed from it. It's a successful formula.

Palm has licensees. Sony, TRG, Apple, HandSpring, Kyocera, and others have all signed on. Like the others, Handspring pays Palm $8 per unit they sell; Meanwhile, Palm makes about $90 on their top of the line handhelds. Margin is everything - I'd stay in hardware if I were them. Maybe changing their business model to OS-only will make sense later on but it's foolish to switch now.

Finally, their hardware far from sucks. My Palm Vx has been extremely durable and works flawlessly. It does things with software that I never dreamed it could when I first bought the Palm 1000. OK, the screen resolution could be better, but it hasn't impacted its usefulness.

MS still isn't hitting on all cylinders with PocketPC after what, 3 years? Palm and their licensees have sold 11 million units since 1997. I doubt that the PocketPC licensees have has sold a tenth of that.

I don't mind frustration with their OS efforts, frankly they are a little slow, but bashing them given their success makes no sense.

Hope that all is well with everyone.
