From this web site--

HS "Formal" declaration of the demise of the Visor line--

http://www.treocentral.com/content/Stories/187-2.htm

PS--You have to watch a stupid commercial to get to it-- Sorry--

Are you like that Japanese guy they found on that island? The war has been over, man. Our side lost. Move on. But seriously, ever since Dubinsky's announcement, it should have been obvious. Handspring is out of the 'organizer' business. They're in the 'communicator' business.

The Visor may be dead but not the Visor community. There are still plenty of strugglers made up of: 1) pennypinchers who drool over Visor clearance sales; 2) newbies; and 3) sentimentalists who can't get over the Springboard technology. The Prism crowd, however, may soon dwindle given the difficulty of getting replacement batteries for ageing li-ions.

We're #1?

I heard Ed's speech on why they moved from Organizers to Communicators. Apparently they wanted to be number one, not number two behind Palm. I guess, I would rather be number two in a small market than go belly up in larger cell phone market.

When Handspring fails in the communicator market, do you think they will close shop, or will they swallow their pride and go back to organizers? I suppose that all depends on the direction that the Organizer market takes. If all organizers become communicators, I will have to go back to paper organizers. There are some places that you can't take anything that transmits.

Handspring may be odd, but they are not totally stupid- they really are trying to be a cutting edge company.

The entire world of PDAs is changing, and no one is really experiencing the sales they want. The new low-end organizers may help, especially if they can get into the mainstream of retail marketing, but no one is experiencing the sorts of sales everyone envisioned for this field a few years ago.

Now, personally, -I- would reintegrate Handspring and Palm and create three quasi-independent divisions out of it- communicators, organizers, and software/OS.

As long as I am dreaming, I'd also want to see them create a standard hot-sync port so one cradle or keyboard would fit most of the product line, upgradeable flash ROM, dual flash memory capability (CF and SD/MMC, using CF mostly as an 'updated' Springboard slot, if the Springboard is really 'dead'.) I'd love to see them pioneer a decent, low priced color device (I think that would sell well stacked up against Sony)

Ah, to dream!

Handspring can still make a big bang. A color PDA without the bells and whistles, whose battery could be replaced as easily as a Nokia cellphone's. That would beat the hell out of Palm and Sony.

this is in response to the several references "stardust" has made about not being able to get replacement batteries for the Prism. This is untrue, you can get brand new, higher capacity li-ion recharchable Prism batteries from www.getadeal.com (they make all kinds of laptop and pda batteries) they only cost $39. I am sure more companies will soon be making replacement batteries for the Prism as more Prisms need battery replacement, check out the "prism" / "where can we get new batteries.." section of this discussion/forum for more info. on this.

What makes me wonder is why did Ed say that they left the Visors because they did not want to be number 2 in the market. I think they easily could have been #1 and possibly already were. When they released the Visor Prism they tottaly kicked Palms butt when you compared the Visor Prism to the Palm IIIc. Did palm have unlimited expandability like the Visors had with their springboard? No way. The Visors that Handspring had at the time when they decided to switch out of the handheld organizer line could of competed extremly well against the Palms.

Bad excuse for leaving the organizer line Mr. Ed.

Well, you can leave if you want, but as long as someone I know owns a Visor, I'm not likely to. :

Hhhmmm. Let's see now. Handspring goes away (inertia is a killer disease) and we don't. There's product out there and folks still using, buying, trading, replacing parts. There's the Neo-Plat-Deluxe camp. And, next door, the prism camp. etc.

So, hey maybe Walmart, being the risk taking savvy mass merchandisers that they are, could crank out a bunch of $99.00 Visor clones (please shrink wrap them, cuz' I really hate blister packs) and keep the good ole' e-conomy stimulated.

OR

Maybe they'll be featured soon at your local Dollar Store.

Sort of like Windows98SE ... I'm not quittin til I has ta'.

the ebookreader fan!
