IR access for Nokia 3360

Hi,
I recently got a Nokia 3360 cell phone with AT&T service. I'm wondering if I can connect its IR port to the IR of my Visor Deluxe. I know that OS 3.1 sucks for IR capabilities. I have BeamSync, and my Visor will sync with my dad's laptop, or any other computer with an IR port. However, I can't get it to talk to the phone. Will my Visor, or any Visor work via IR with this phone?

Nigel offered you some good advice. The only thing that I'd add is pretty basic. Have you turned IR reception on the phone on? It's not on by default due to potential for battery drain. Menu-9 will get you to the option to turn it on. If there's no contact after two minutes, it'll shut IR off again.

Hi--more questions than answers......

First...I am very interested in a phone from AT&T that will allow me to do some very simple browsing using my VDX. The 3360 was an option when I saw it had IR capabilities. A friend has one and I was able to beam an addess card from the VDX directly into the phone with IR activated (by the way....only way I could find to deactivate it was to turn off the phone. That gave me some hope that maybe the phone will suffice as a wireless modem.

As far as IR link...I have used it to sync with my laptop via IR. Worked wonderfully for the trial period and then I stopped using it. No real need for me, but it did eliminate the need for a cradle. Kinda cool.

On browsing Nokia's site, I did find some downloads for the 3360 including a wireless modem driver and a pc connectivity suite.

However, since I don't actually have a phone, I'm not able to experiment around with it. Sales reps from AT&T local stores are less than knowledgeable with these issues. I have yet to read the .pdf manual from nokia so maybe there's some insight in there.

Is anyone aware if AT&T will allow data transmissions through any of their phones....other than fax data? Different technology I believe.

Can anyone be specific on how to set up the 3360 to connect as a wireless modem? I am not fully aware what AT (sic) protocols are exactly. Is that something I need to contact AT&T for....my ISP....or are there other ways. Thanks for the help.

Also....I may ask some of my questions in a new thread as they are hidden in a long post. If any new info, I'll make a remark in this thread.

If the phone supports the AT command set, then you don't need to do much in the way of setting it up at all.

You install IRLink on your Visor. Select 'Redirect cradle' on its main screen, tap the 'Mixed' button and at the bottom of the next screen, set the Network option to IrDA 1.0.

Make sure you have the correct settings in the Visor Network preferences for your ISP - dialup number, username, etc.

Then press Menu followed by 9 on the Nokia phone, put it next to the Visor and start a network app, like Blazer.

That's it. 'AT' refers to the standard modem commands that the Visor sends. The phone will react to those and dial a connection for you.

BUT.... depending on your carrier, you may need to arrange data service from them. That's something you'll have to find out for yourself.

anyone know if at&t will allow such data connections? it seems as if the phone will allow it pretty easily, it's at&t i'm worried about.

someone please inform me if they're successful using the VDX, nokia 3360 and at&t. i don't actually have the phone yet.....but if it is feasible, i'll be buying it in a second.
