Question Upgrading to Windows XP Finally...

Hi All,

I have a Compaq Armada m700 and its my last computer that I have left to upgrade to XP. This is my main computer since I take it around with me and I hotsync my VisorEDGE with it.

My question is, I'm going to go nuclear and wipe the entire hard drive out and do a clean install of Windows XP... how do setup my Palm Software so it hotsyncs perfectly again.

I have a backup module, so I'll definitely backup first, but what are the steps I should take? Are there any other problems what I should be aware of upgrading to Windows XP?

So once I have the base XP install done, should I just install the current version of Palm Desktop?

By the way, I am using Yahoo IntelliSync to sync my data to Yahoo....

Thanks All

Re: Upgrading to Windows XP Finally...

I think all you need to do is just reinstall the Palm software and hotsync your device. It'll treat it as if you'd just moved computers and your data will be backed up all over again.

I installed Palm softare on my sister's XP notebook machine and it worked fine, hotsync and backing up everything - just needed to use the correct user name for it.

However, Win XP keeps recognizing new hardware after that everytime we plug in to hotsync. It's annoying. Now THAT I don't really know how to fix, and there isn't much time to diagnose it (she's gone back to college).

Maybe ask me again end of this year, when my sister comes back home, or someone who's dealt with this can help you.

No problem. I didnt know you had just only recently posted this message. Your response was even faster! I had only just finsihed posting and went back to the main discussions page and already your name was updated on this forum!

BTW, you need to backup all other software that you use, like your Yahoo intelisync and all the Palm OS software that you have on your PC as well (i think you know about this already), and, preferably, put the program files in the same folder as on your PC. Not necessary for, but in a worst case scenario data loss, your Visor would automaically find them and install by themsleves.

Good luck on your upgrade.

Yea, there's some new versions of Yahoo! IntelliSync and other software that I'm using on this laptop... that's why I want to upgrade. Plus, I want to get all my machines up to XP....

I'm just a little hesitant on this laptop because everything works perfectly - I just like to be updated

Thanks

I have installed xp a couple of times.

unplug the cradle from the pc.
Install the latest desktop version from the handspring web site.
Plug in the cradle.
Put visor in the cradle. Hotsync.
xp should install the handspring software.
Your visor may complain that it couldn't talk to the PC. Wait for the software install finishes and try again.

OK here's the deal with Windows XP

You'll be wiping the drive, so there's no record whatsoever of your visor.

Palm Desktop 4.0.1 will need to be downloaded from the handspring website and installed
-during the installation it will ask you to sync your your visor, at that point just press next and when it says that it detected that you didn't sync and if you wanna try again, say NO. Then the installation will comlete and only then will you be able to hotsync.
Make sure to enter the exact same username you have right now on your visor (it can be found in the top right hand corner of teh hotsync screen on the visor).
And before you install Yahoo stuff, just load your stuff off your backup module and hotsync to the Palm Desktop once. That way you'l always have a backup copy of that data in there.

When you hotsync for the first time it'll bring up the add new hardware wizard. Choose to specify the location and browse to C:\Program Files\Handspring\Drivers and force it to install that driver. By then the handheld will time out. That's when you sync again it'll prompt to choose the username, select it and let it sync up.
Then you cna go ahead and install any Yahoo software and conduits you want. But this is the one sure way that you will not have any problems synching. Trust me I do this for a living!

NOT the cradle, although that was unavoidable as well (its a notebook!!), but just pluggin the Visor will cause Win eXtra Painful to detect new hardware everytime.

Like I said, I didnt have time to diagnose it properly.

I upgraded my son's DELL Inspiron 3500 from Win98 to XP Home with no problems. Runs better than 98.

I did run the Diagnostic utility and uninstalled any software deemed not to run under XP. His hardware was fine. After all diagnostic reports were clean, I then installed XP over 98 without a hitch.

Of course, all his important data files were backed up twice in case of any disasters.

Thanks again for the help everyone. I did not upgrade to XP yet - I had some other matters to take care of last night that came up.

I hope to get it done tomorrow evening. I'll post my results then.

Regards

Yay! I'm finally XP on my laptop!

Everything went *EXTREMELY* Smoothly, no problems whatsoever.

Here's the steps I took after the clean install:

1) Downloaded and installed Palm Desktop from handspring.com
2) Downloaded and installed Yahoo! Intellisync
3) Configured Intellisync to syncronize all data in Address, Calendar, ToDo, and Notepad
4) Pressed the Hotsync button!

I didn't do an initial hotsync with Palm Desktop because I remembered last time I did this I didn't do a hotsync with Palm Desktop and it worked flawlessly.

My hotsync cable and cradle were auto detected upon initial hotsync and drivers were successfully installed.

Thanks all for the tips!

Congratulations- glad to see that you upgraded without much problems.

Just wondering - what Palm dektop version was it that your Edge originally comes with? Come to think of it I had installed the Desktop version of my Pro for my sister's notebook for use with her Deluxe.

However that doesn't really explain why Win XP keep detecting new hardware and insisting to install the driver everytime we plug in the Deluxe. Anyways, the thing worked, so basically, who cares.

The version that I used was Palm Desktop 4.01 , the version that is found on the handspring.com website. You will need to put in your Visor's Serial Number in order to download Palm Desktop and Hotsync manager.

One thing I noticed when I'm hotsyncing is it now says "Palm Powered" in the lower left hand corner of the hotsync manager.

Also, the hotsyncs seem to be slower. I'm using a USB connection and am hotsyncing the same amount of data - nothing has changed - and it 'seems' to be acting slower... I have no proof since I didn't time the hotsync speeds under win 2000.

I think there was a thread around here floating around about speeding up hotsyncs, but I couldn't find it. IIRC, the thread said to manipulate settings on the Visor itself rather then on the Palm Desktop.

Also, my settings on the Hot Sync manager speed are set to "as fast as possible".

If there is any way to speed things up, I'd like to know...thanks!

Sorry to inform you those settings are related to serial sync.

As for the speed, could it be that your USB port does not function as well under this OS?
Why don't you go to the device manager (right click on my computer, go to properties, hardware tab and device manager) and write down exactly everythign you have listed under USB Controllers... I'll let you know.

Well if she has XP< an older version of the PD would explain why it keeps trying to install the drivers. The PD does not vary according to the visor, but only according to teh OS

General Purpose USB Hub
Intel(r) 82371AB/EB PCI to USB Universal Host Controller
USB Printing Support
USB Root Hub

I just checked - the PD that comes with my Pro, if my eyes were not deceiving me is the version 4.0.1 that MitzEclipse downloaded. I don't know why XP keep detecting new hardware.

But then again, i won't care about this subject until she comes back with the notebook this year end.
