Re: To ProjectZero WRT VISOR Outlook hotsynch
Hi Michele and thanks for the added information.
Keep in mind: Eventhough DTG knows who you are, DTG is not the same as Outlook. Which is a good thing because it tells me that the HotSync installation is working--- it recognizes your Visor and recognizes everything but Outlook.
Since the previous owner didn't use Outlook 2000, it sounds like your Outlook installation is what Microsoft refers to as an "Internet Only" install. If you run Outlook and click on Tools->Options, see if there is a tab with the name of "Mail Services". If you do not see this tab, then your installation is an internet-only install (irregardless if you are or are not using Outlook for E-Mail).
In fact, if you do not see the Mail Services tab, then I would undo the stuff you did when you went into the Control Panel/Mail and created a new Internet account (which is what you did when you forged ahead and didn't see what dialog boxes that I was referring to. What you did there was create the ability for Outlook 2000 to send/receive Internet mail when you should not have done so). I don't know the long-term ramifications of what you did here-- since you use a different E-Mail package, it could be as benign as having just another E-Mail program installed on your Win98 computer.
If you want to return your Outlook 2000 installation to a state before you inadvertantly added Internet access, you can do this:
1) Go back to the Control Panel/Mail applet.
2) Click once on account name that you created.
Note: The title may have the added text of " (default) " appended to it. That's OK and I would expect it there.
3) Click on the "Remove" buton on the right hand side.
4) Windows will ask you if you want to delete that profile.
5) Click on "Yes"
At this point, you should not have anything listed in the "Internet Accounts" dialog box. If you do see something else listed in this dialog box, stop right here, don't do anything else and report back what you see and let me know if you have anything important stored in Outlook 2000.
If you do not see anything else listed in the Internet Accounts dialog box, then continue to read on.
I am guessing that the version of PocketMirror you are using is not version 2.0.5 or later. Probably 2.0.3 or 2.0.4. You can check the version of PocketMirror by clickling on "Start/Programs/PocketMirror/PocketMirror Settings". Then click on the green icon in the upper left hand corner. Click on "About". If it's not 2.0.5 or later, then you (and your husband) will have to do the following:
1) Your better half will have download the most current update for PocketMirror from the Chapura site (here's the link). The one he needs to download is the one that says "PocketMirror 2.0.5 Update" under the English section.
Unfortunately, the file is over 2 MB in size and that's a pretty big chunk to send across wireless E-Mail. But hey, if it's allowed, go for it :-) It it isn't, you might have to have someone here on land get you that file on a CD-R or multiple floppies via conventional mail-- if that's allowed.
Note: The Chapura site will ask you to "register" and the file is a little over 2 MB in size.
2) Once you've obtained this file (it will be a .EXE file), do not run it yet.
3) Stop and exit the HotSync Manager.
4) Run Outlook 2000 to ensure you can still get into Outlook and access the calendar, Contacts, Notes, and Tasks. Exit Outlook.
5) Run that update file that you downloaded from Chapura.
6) The update file will update the necessary components. It may tell you to reboot after it is done updating. If it doesn't, that's OK. I would still reboot the computer after the update is completed.
7) After the update is completed, run Outlook. You should see a green icon that looks like a PalmPilot on the Outlook menu task bar (horizontal, not the vertial Outlook bar).
Click on it (you might have to select your user name) and select "Settings" button.
8) From the "Change Synchronization Preferences" screen, click on the "Quick one-time action setup" drop-down box, and select "Handheld overwrites Outlook".
9) Close out of Chapura Settings.
10) Synchronize!
If the HotSync dialog box does not show errors, look at the Outlook calendar, contacts, notes and tasks and see if your Visor information is there.

Now, here's some "What ifs"
Q1: What if you do see version 2.0.5 for PocketMirror?
A1: You will have to change your Outlook 2000 configuration to what Microsoft calls, "Corporate/Workgroup" mode. According to Chapura, they have seen problems with the "Internet only" installation that you currently have with your installation of Outlook. It could be that under NT, your Outlook installation was installed as Corporate/Workgroup and perhaps that's why it worked. The steps to change Outlook over to Corporate/Workgroup below require the Office 2000 CD. If you don't have it, then see next question.
1) First, I would exit HotSync Manager and uninstall PocketMirror.
2) In Outlook, click on "Tools/Options".
3) Click on the "Mail Delivery" tab, and at the bottom click on the "Reconfigure Mail Support" button.
4) Change the setting to "Corporate/Work Group mode".
5) Select "Yes" to the dialog box, and Outlook will shut down automatically.
6) Restart Outlook and you will be prompted for the Office 2000 CD, and the installation will finish.
7) Reinstall PocketMirror.
Q2: You don't have the Office 2000 CD.
A2: Until you get the Office 2000 CD, you won't be able to use Outlook 2000 with your Visor. In the meantime, I would revert back to using the Palm Desktop (you'll have to uninstall PocketMirror) so that you can back your Visor data to your computer.
Q3: Your version of PocketMirror is not 2.0.5 and you do have the Office CD. But your husband cannot get you the PocketMirror 2.0.5 update file to you because it's too big to send over E-Mail and he doesn't know how to get it on diskettes (or doesn't have a CD-R burner) to mail to me. Can you still try changing Outlook to Coporate/Workgroup?
A3: I wouldn't. But if feel adventurous, go ahead. Outlook does allow you to change back. If you have stuff in Outlook already, just make sure you back it up. If you feel like Ms. Adventure, do the steps I listed in Q1/A1 above.
Note to hubby: If you don't know how to get a 2MB file on a 1.44 MB diskette or you don't have a CD-R burner, let me know here and we'll discuss it off this board.
Hope this helps.
