It sounds like you're either not fully extending the support or it is defective. First, be sure the mechanism is fully extended. Turn the keyboard over and check the the metal cross support (the metal arms are in essence a U-shape) is right up against the edge of the connector housing. Next, try pressing down on the plastic support... it should spring back to the upright postition. When the metal arms are fully extended, they should taper slightly towards each other - this is what causes the support to spring up and remain there. On my Stowaway, just moving the support in by 1/8" to 1/4" causes the arms to run parallel and the plastic piece to lose its spring-up.
On my Visor (Ice), the top of the plastic support makes contact with the case right below where www.handspring.com is molded in (approximately 1/4" above the "hole" where the hotsync cradle tab locks in).
