i'm not sure how the handspring modem operates, but this might help.
i run a home office: on a single phone line i have my telephone, fax, and modem. all of these devices are connected to a device called the comswitch which recognizes incoming calls and directs them to the right port. ie: someone calls my house, and the comswitch picks up after the first ring, listens for a fax or modem tone and then sends the call to whatever device it was meant for. this way, voice calls are always sent to the phone, and my girlfriend never has to transfer a fax line to the fax (although, it is possible if by some fluke the originating fax had no cng tone to tell the comswitch what to do.) anyway, you can pick one up at any any staples or office max, i'm sure they're available via the web, and they come in two or three different models depending on your needs. i got the one that can handle the most devices, and i think it cost me 90 or a bill. i've been very pleased with its performance so far.
so when i do get my visormodem - i'm holding out for the sixpack - that's how i plan to handle it.
hope it helps.
