Thanks for sharing anything you can!

I should be getting the units tomorrow, and will try to give out tidbits until the full review is complete.

I just hope Screenshot hack gets updated soon for the expanded colors.

James (and everyone considering getting a Prism),

Check out http://www.bugme.net/, a new (beta) service from HausOfMaus. I've been playing with this on a PalmIIIc, and it's GREAT! The most recent version of BugMe allowed you to take screen captures in color, and the bugme.net service lets you e-mail these screens, along with text notes via a hotsync conduit. I've gotten some great shots of color apps like V-rally using it. I've posted a sample shot at:
http://users2.50megs.com/robcheng/t...gMeMessage.html
(I apologize in advance for the banner ads, but I'm too cheap to pay for web hosting)

They might only support 8-bit color right now, though (although I'm not sure there are any PalmOS apps out yet that support 16-bit color, besides handspring's photo album)

Is the Paltinum's screen any better than the VDX? It would be nice if it had an improved backlight.

Performance of a computer system is not soly decided by the processor speed. Another important factor is the memory speed, which doesn't grows as fast as CPU. As a result, it's almost impossible to double the performance by simply double the CPU clock. IMHO, Getting 50% better is pretty good.

I think the data given by Handspring may come from certain benchmark program. It's the real performance gain, not the bloated data from simple calculation. (the latter would be more favorable for adertisement purpose, though)

Platinum's Processor speed = 33 MHz = 2 * speed of Visor

2/1 = 200%
subtract the original 100% speed of the Visor, and you have a 100% increase! Yes, the Visor is 50% the speed of the Platinum, but that doesn't mean a 50% increase!

I wonder who the math major was who made that error! They didn't happen to work for NASA by any chance, did they?
(I can joke, because I know the head of the Pathfinder/Polar Lander Missions great guy too! (If you're reading this, hi Dave!))

correct me if im wrong, but an increase in the processor's clock speed does not necessarily mean a proportional increase in how fast programs are executed. that is, just cause the 33MHz processor is (about) twice as fast as the clock on the regular ol deluxe model, doesnt mean that you can run stuff on it twice as fast, as well.

dont get me wrong, i mean, im no CS major or nuthin (no, wait. i AM. damn, i should know this stuff).

but, i think theres a lot more involved than JUST the clock speed. theres all the stuff like the caching, the fetching of memory, bus speed, blah blah blah. the clock isnt always the bottleneck.

sure, if you could access memory in a single clock cycle (like on a SHARC processor), it would increase proportionally. but, say, if you doubled the clock on an intel machine, you MIGHT get a 10% overall speed-up.

and, i dunno if this makes MUCH of a difference, but the prescence of an updraded OS (3.0 -> 3.5) might even add to the slowness.

aside from my ignorance of computer architecture, i AM looking forward to this new handspring device. its a shame i got a deluxe just over a month ago.

dunno if id be getting the prism or just the platinum. color does sond nice, but im concerned about:

- will the color model have less resolution than the b/w model?
- will most (all) the modules work with the prism?
- how about all the apps, im assuming since they (basicallly) use the same OS, theyll work with the prism, too?
- i DO like having rechargeable batteries. i DONT like having to recharge them. true, its a hassle to replace the batteries every other week or so. but i can imagine its not MUCH more fun having to recharge it in the cradle every other day. i like being able to be out on the road or on a trip, and if i start to get low battery, i can just slap in a fresh pair.
- i have the collapsable keyboard. i WOULD like the prism to fit it. not sure if i have much hope for it, though. i dunno. the prism is going to be rechargable. does that mean they reconfigured the physical connection on the bottom of the unit? is there an extra pin or two for power? if so, perhaps it does have a wider connection than the old model, but the keyboard just wont use it. i doubt they would go out of their way to make the prism backwards-compatible with a 3rd-party external keyboard, but ya never know.
- i guess i could do some research on this, but someday i plan on writing some apps for the visor (whatEVER model i wind up with). is there anything special about the new OS? i mean, whats different about it, anyways? anything that i, bothas a programmer and as a casual PDA user, can utilize?

ok, ive rambled on enough already. i (initially) just wanted to say that "no, a doubling of the clock speed usually doesnt mean a doubling of the overall performance".

I ordered my Prsim today (from Handspring), and the lady I spoke to said that they are in stock and will ship in the next 2-4 days.

She also told me that the Prism IS compatible with the Stowaway! The issue with the old cradles is not pin-out, but form factor.

Question OK so do I buy a IPAQ or Prism

I like Palm, I like the look of the Prism and am about to upgrade my Palm IIIe, I want/need

*All usual organiser features - Sync with Outlook 2000
*Games (Liberty etc.)
*MP3
*AdvantGo
*Wireless access

i.e. Pretty much power user.

The way I see it there are 2 options:

Prism + MiniJam (64Mb)
$449 + $259.00 = $708

IPAQ + CF Jacket + CF Card (64Mb for MP3's)
$499 + $39.00 + $159.95 = $697.95

Now theres not much in it, but the features on an IPAQ are pretty good even though there's not the simplicity of Palm I love.

My Point! The Prism seems very expensive and puts Palm Head to Head with Pocket PC.

I have an iPaq. I'd swap it straight up for a Prism if I could. Probably even a Platinum.

Prism versus Jornada would be a tougher sell.
