I just got my visor and I've spent much of the day trying to get it syncing with 98 and Win2k through both USB and the IR port: for those that follow (someone correct me if I'm wrong):
Win 98, USB
-------------------------------------
Plug in cradle, boot 98, install Palm Desktop, put Visor in cradle, press HotSync, driver should install (placed on HD by CD install).
If USB sync stop working: soft reset visor while in cradle, reboot, try again.
Win 98, IR
Download IBM WorkPad IRSYNC software, install all four PRC files onto visor, soft reset visor, goto PREF, change category to SyncPanel, select InfraRed, try HotSync. This will disable USB support unless you remove PADHTALL.PRC and do a soft reset (which will disable IR).
Win 2000, USB
If you follow steps for 98 USB the Visor will be detected but driver installation will always fail. Win2k is out and there are still no drivers by Handspring.
Win 2000, IR
If you follow steps for 98 IR and try HotSync you will get an error that the visor was unable to communicate to the desktop, the software made by IRLINK says that it does not support Win2k. As far as I know the IR does not use the drivers made for the USB so even if Handspring fixes the USB drivers it will still not work.
Conclusion:
If you are a professional developer which most people who use this product probably are then you are probably using Windows 2000 and you are therefore screwed. So uninstall 2000 and NT and put 98 back on.
