If you have USB on your PC, do you really need a cradle to connect a Visor? Could you use just a standard USB cable?

I just ordered mine and was told that there are 3 ways to synch at the moment:

1. USB Cradle
2. Travel Cable which is serial and extra $
3. Travel Cable via USB port by 3rd party. Handspring sales rep did not know, (or did not want to say), who the 3rd party is.
