Assuming you use a PC (and not a Mac) you can use applications like Winproxy (www.winproxy.com) or Sygate. These programs act like software routers, but require the computer on which they reside to be on in order for the other computers to access the internet. I have used Winproxy for this purpose, but when I needed to buy another license to add a fourth computer, I decided to buy a hardware router. After rebate the price of the router was $4 more than Winproxy. Hardware routers work MUCH better than proxyservers (speed and performance). With prices (after rebate) of routers being so low, it is really a no brainer to get a router instead of a software proxyserver. There is one thing a software solution let you do easier than most routers: filtering of objectionable sites. My SMC router does not have this capability, but one can log all the sites accessed, but of course this requires a computer to be on all the time to log this.
