Thumbs up

Just like many of you I called Targus this week to get an update on my order. I too was told that the keyboard would not be available until mid-May. And after reading some of the posts on this forum I decided to just sit tight and wait for either the local stores to start carrying the keyboards or for my order to be fulfilled by Targus.

Well the wait is over! My keyboard just arrived and already my co-workers are drooling over it. I cant' wait to show it off to my friends this weekend! This is fun! So if you ordered a keyboard from Targus, just hold tight it will arrive very soon.

Cool

Well, I was psyching myself up for an unpleasant wait (a la Handspring) after reading all of these messages about Targus moving the ship date to mid-May, and then received the following e-mail today:

"Dear Customer:

Thank you for shopping at BuyTargus.com.

The following product/s which you ordered have been shipped on Thursday,
April 20, 2000 from Carol Stream, IL:

Shipped Item/s:
Shipped 1 STOWAWAY PORTABLE KEYBOARD "

Hopefully I will have the bad boy in my greedy little hands tomorrow.....

I never got the email, but I got under order tracking at Buy Targus site, it shows that it was shipped yesterday. It to final delivery warehouse around noon today... too late to put on truck for today, so I have to wait until Monday... even though the dang thing is but 5 miles away.

This was UPS ground shipped out of St. Louis to Dallas TX.

$59.99????? The GoType! case is $19.99!! And it will also hold the visor. If Targus is going to charge $60 for the case that will carry the Visor and the Stowaway in one, they're just nuts!! They can just forget it!

I plan on getting the Stowaway, but if they continue to charge more for everything they sell, I don't think they're going to last long.

Actually, I had a GoType! Keyboard for my Palm III (designed by the same folks who have come up with the Stowaway too). The keys on the GoType! are too small for comfort, and the Right Shift/Up Cursor keys are clustered right next to one another (not a good place for them to be).

Although the GoType was better than writing notes longhand in a notebook, or attempt to write Graffiti during a meeting, the Stowaway with it's full-size notebook keys will end up (in my opinion) being a much better option.......A totally superior option when you also factor in the size & weight of the two keyboard contenders.

matty:
You are not alone. I haven't gotten a confirmation, and absolutely nothing is shown on my order when I look it up on buytargus.com! Well the order is there, but all of the shipping info is just blank spaces! What gives? I hope it is just that they haven't gotten to my order yet, or something. I'll call them on Monday if it still doesn't say anything.

This Stowaway keyboard rocks. Contrary to what I have read the typing response in Memo is realtime. The instrauctions are good - but they tell the PC guys to double click on the .prc file to get it into the istaller but don't tell the Mac guys. Of course we have to do the same to get the installer in there.

I wonder how long it will take me to accumulate 7.6 pounds (my powerbook's weight) worth of accessories for the Visor?

Question

Could anyone recommend a good belt-clip case for the Visor? There are moments when I don't want to stick it in my pants pocket.

Just when I was getting excited at all of the 'received' postings I was reading, I got this:

Dear Customer:

Regretfully, the item(s) listed below from your 4/3/00 order with
BuyTargus.com became back ordered.

Backordered Item/s: Qty Prod. Description
1 STOWAWAY PORTABLE KEYBOARD FOR

I figured with a 4/3 purchase date, I would be guaranteed one. Guess not. I called and the Rep said she thought it would ship on Thurs or Fri of this week. As long as CompUSA doesnt get it first then targus will keep my business. (then again Targus will get some of my business no matter what - they will just determine what margine they earn on the product)

Contrary to what I read in the VisorCentral Stowaway article, it didn't come with the zippered neoprene case. Because the case is not mentioned on the box or in the manual and is also not listed on the Targus website, I'm guessing they decided to leave the case from the Handspring version of the keyboard.

Though the keyboard is great, I was really expecting a case. Bummer...

Kemp, I got the same email. And I'm having a freakin' aneurysm over here waiting for my keyboard. I think I ordered a few days after you did, but early enough that I thought I would be included in the first shipment. Guess not.

Can't.....hold on much...longer.......

Angry

They say misery loves company but it does not make me feel one bit better right now. I too got the dreaded email, only my order was dated 4/2. Disappointed does not begin to describe how I feel as when I saw the email I thought it had to be my shipping confirmation. Am I feeling sorry for myself now or what?! Anyway, I will be even more disappointed if it shows up in retail channels before Targus fills its own orders, but I am afraid that may be exactly what is going on.

So after receiving the disappointing email, I called PilotGear and asked if they had Stowaways in stock. The CSR said the did and i promptly ordered one. After receiving the confirmation email, I cancelled my Targus order. My new keyboard should be here today.
(PS - overnight delivery from PilotGear cost the same as 2 day delivery from Targus.)

Frogger1 - I posted a message earlier that a CSR with Buy Targus emailed me, telling me that retail channels would have the product before their online store. Odd way to do business if you ask me.

Thumbs down

It gets odder still. I actually ordered the Stowaway online the evening of 4/1. When my email said I ordered it on 4/2, I assumed it was because I am on West Coast time (definitely way different than any other time zone!) that Targus received my order on what was 4/2 in their time zone, or perhaps did not pick up the order until the next morning during business hours. Imagine my suprise to receive my credit card bill today, with a charge from Targus, dated 4/1. So according to their records, they charged me for an order before they received the order, not to mention before they had the item in stock. I agree Kemp, definitely an odd(if not illegal)way to conduct business. I know, April Fools!

Kemp-Thanks for the tip. I am about to start making some calls!

Kemp-thanks again for the tip. I have ordered from PalmGear and cancelled my order with Targus. I have also sent off a scathing email to Targus with a copy to Think Outside. Even Handspring didn't charge credit cards until they were ready to ship!

Yes, thanks Kemp.

I too have ordered one. I couldn't get it through those big chains since I am in Canada. However, PalmGear/PilotGear does ship to Canada, and fortunately, uses USPS Global Priority Mail which usually is very good - cheap and fast.
