Exclamation Aluminum / Titanium Machined Visor Enclosure

www.dave.com makes Aluminum shells for the entire Palm 3 series. Has anyone contacted them about perhaps creating visor shells? Maybe if enough of us contact them they'll actually do it. They also have a TRGpro shell, so I can't imagine the springboard as being the problem.

How many of us would be interested?

I figure like most companies.... If a bunch of us who were interested in actually having one of these made were to get together and ask dave.com to do it they would. Like anything if there's enough demand for it a company would be foolish not to make it. Those of us looking for a more rugged Visor would definatly benifit from the AL case. Not to mention the Cool factor of having one unlike almost any other. The big thing in my opinion would be the people with Prisms or Platinums that have chipping/wearing paint.

That's just my $.02

Exclamation Reply from Dave.com

Figures RIGHT after my last post I recieved an E-mail reply from www.dave.com it reads as follows.

Actually, we've been approached by a Japanese website, http://www.tanomi.com
that is in the final stage of soliciting orders from site visitors for a Visor
replacement case. Their site is a forum for ideas, when enough people want
a certain product or service, Tanomi contacts manufacturers for quotes.
We were selected to build the case. The only problem is they want a worldwide exclusive
on the Visor case for 2 months after delivery. I have asked if there is a way
people can order outside of Japan, but they are not really set up to handle
e-commerce in english or other languages. I am still in the process of neggotiating
with them on this point, so it may still be possible. Their price is 29,800 Yen, or
about $250, which is a little more than I would have priced it here, that
and the export costs may make the idea of buying from outside Japan impractical
anyway.

Thanks for the interest in our products, and hopefully I can find a way to get
this product to the many eager Visor owners outside of Japan!

sounds like we Might have a chance.

I hope so. I sent him an E-Mail about my Platinum last month. Is anyone keeping track of numbers?

Dave in December

I sent Dave.com an email in December.

http://discussion.visorcentral.com/...60419#post60419

He says that if he has enough people asking for a replacement case for the Prism he will start making them.

Photos of the Aluminum Body Case

Here are some photos of the Aluminum body case by the Tanomi, the Japanese company in talks with http://www.dave.com.

http://www.tanomi.com/items/images/visor_01.jpg

http://www.tanomi.com/items/images/visor_02.jpg

They appear to all be rendered 3D models. I don't read Japanese but their site has the words Prism and Platinum on it. That's a good sign, no?

Here is the page about the cases, all in Japanese...

Smile

Mmmm, shiny aluminium case. I'd buy one like a shot. What colour though? Plain ally wins for shininess but black is cool and some of the colours might be fun...

I'd buy one in a heartbeat, even at the $250 price tag. I won't complain a bit if they are cheaper tho.

Question Color

I think I'd go with the black one personally. I have a Blue VDX right now, and have recently moved into a much more professoinal work env. I was working as a field service tech for a computer manufacturer in wisconsin. Now I'm working as a consultant in Indy. Went from dockers with polos to dress pants with ties.

I think we should forward this string to www.dave.com and see what they think.

Exclamation E-mail from www.dave.com

I recieved a second E-mail from www.dave.com regarding the design of the Visor Enclosure. The atachment they sent me is the same picture from the links above. The E-mail response is as follows.

****
Lars,

We estimate that our first shipment to them will be around May 1 2001, hopefully
a little sooner. Like all of our cases, it will have machined aluminum buttons.
The TRG and III have gray anodized aluminum buttons, which look kind of like
plastic in the pictures. The Visor's buttons will be flush like the IIIc, and
will have the icons engraved, just like the iiic.

I've attached our 3D rendering of the proposed design, feel free to post it
on the boards. There is a semi useful free translator at http://www.worldlingo.com,
that will translate some of the Japanese characters at Tanomi.com.

Regards,

Dave
*****

So from what I understand the longest we would HAVE to wait would be July 1st we should in theory be able to get them. Based of the previous E-mail claiming the Japanese group wanted Exclusive rights to the AL Enclosure for 2 months. (I'm thinking I'd be willing to pay extra for Titanium if they could do it

"Heh you only have a Handspring Visor Platinum? I've got a Titanium Visor....." Sorry...... work is starting to get to me.

Lars

I'm in...

If they come up with a fully cradle/case compatible aluminum or titanium case and also had anodizing options, I'd be in for my Prism. I'd love the option of the metal case. I wonder how that would affect wireless springboards ,if any, though?

wireless

I doubt aluminium bodies would have any effect on wireless at all, since aluminium has no magnetic properties.

As for that palm V static shock issue, I think it isn't(an issue, I mean.) As far as i know that only happened to that one guy. Anyways, One person I met got his palm IIIe toasted by static too(though not his motherboard), and the palm IIIe is made of plastic.

And what's with him wanting damages from Palm, anyways? I would be highly surprised if his manual doesn't have some kind of disclaimer about palm not being liable for damages casued by the use of the equipment. Heck, I think that discalimer comes on just about every computer peripherial ever made.

Exclamation Titanium Visor Body

If people are interested in a custom limited production Titanium Enclosure for your visor solo-plat Please E-mail me at [email protected] I'll provide you with aproximate pricing info assuming we have enough people. If I can't get between 10-20 people who will definatly buy them it most likely won't happen. Thanks

Red face Prism

I hadn't talked to them about the prism at all. I'll send my contact an E-mail first thing Wed morning, and see what he has to say. I do know the prism won't use the same case as all the other visors. If they are planning on making the AL case for the prism also then the TI could potentially be possible as well.

I would be interested to know if you're going to make the TI case. I plan to get a Ti Powerbook G4 in the (near?) future, and it would be really cool to have a matching Visor...
