I've discovered a problem with USB synching: USB hubs.
I recently upgraded from a PalmVx to a a Prism. My desktop is an Athlon running Win98 with all of the updates as of 12/25/2000. My keyboard and mouse are plugged into a a USB hub.
I initially plugged my dock into the USB hub. When I tried to restore my data to the new Prism, the process would halt at some random file. It would usually be a large file and usually after less than 20 seconds.
After much experimentation, I discovered that synching would work if I disconnected my keyboard and mouse from the hub. I assume it would also work if I plugged the dock directly into my desktop, but my desktop is very difficult to access (which is why I have a hub).
I'm not sure whose mistake this is, but I'm inclined to think it's a Handspring problem because the keyboard and mouse work fine. I also tested an IPAQ a few months ago and it synched all the way through (when it could connect in the first place). You would think QA at Handspring would try plugging the dock into a hub with a mouse and keyboard.
