Just thought that those using the soundsgood or minijam may be interested in this.

Looks like I might be enjoying two hours of different tunes on my soundsgood this summer...

Here's the clincher:

"The question that remains unanswered is whether MP3Pro will include security protocols to protect copyright material. Adding such copy protection would undoubtedly receive cheers from content owners like the major music labels, but it does not serve the wants of the general audience who may eschew any technology that puts restrictions on the music they listen to. An example is the consumer rejection of DVD players using DIVX. Some analysts see the lack of copyright protection measures to be a competitive advantage for the standard MP3 format."

I'd bet it does.. no thanks...

There are several other audion compression formats that people may want to keep an eye on:

VQFs

And Ogg Vorbis
http://www.vorbis.com/

The new MP3 format sounds cool and all, but there is going to be a LOT of competition in the next few months...including the DIVX (MP4) Compression.

Though i know you're quoting someone else, i don't agree the divx failed because of the copy protect problem. Divx was a ridiculous format and had, in my opinion, no redeeming qualities. I have a dvd player and love it (and the majority of dvd players have copy protection on them as well). Divx was just plain short sighted and ignorant.

However, I'm not disagreeing with what you're pointing out, and, actually, I agree with your assessment of copy protected mp3 type formats. I just get a little annoyed when people single out divx for any reason other than that it was just a stupid idea.

MP3 is actually an MPEG-1, layer 3 compression. (same for MP2)

A slightly more accurate representation is MPEG-4 (which is the DivX's video codec's base). Most people that record TV and such using DivX actually use an MP3 codec for audio, anyway (it won't save that much space without degrading). MPEG-4 degrades and picks up nasty harmonics sometimes that make guitars sound like french horns. Believe me, it does!

Ogg Vorbis rules. Why? Because it's free. Technically you have to pay royalties for use of mp3's.
Plus, Ogg Vorbis sounds better while the file is the same size as an mp3.
