I have little doubt that they do, places such as visorcentral are excellent research sites for user opinions.
However, what you say is most likely the reason why they will never show themselves. At the moment the feel of the board is "outside of handspring", firstly that would change. Secondly there would be the expectation of handspring to respond, yet another board to monitor and staff for tech support. Finally they would get dragged into squabbles and the like, and problems with handspring would be fought by handspring and the person in full view, and that's bad for the company. A silent company that has users to talk for it gains much more respect than a company that either gets involved in bitter squabbles or gets yelled at because although they answer the technical problems, they don't to the "why didn't you do this? answer me handspring!!"
Overall, for the company, a bad decision to show themselves.
