I don't want to let any cats out of the bag but I was able to use a prototype of the new adapter. The initial concept was a good one however it wasn't quite ready for prime time. I think Zee and the gang took it back to the drawing board to make it right.

Thumbs up Wow!

Had not checked the thread for a while and when I looked, Wow! The flipcover is HOT! I agree with sanchan "No kidding, whoever said that handspring should purchase the FlipCover in bulk and offer with their Visor units (sans Edge) was right on. I just received my flip cover and OH MY GAWD this thing is awesome".

Handspring missed the boat not having it part of the original Visor. It is a great product and as I said before you will not be disappointed.

Some answers

"I have heard that clear plastics are by nature weaker than opaque plastics. Does anyone out there have the technical background to confirm or deny this?"

Adding dye to tranlucent parts has a very minimal effect on the material's structural charaterisitcs. Any time you add a foreign substance to a material you change the mechanical properites, but the percentage volume of dye in a part is so small that this effect is typically ignored.

"My hinge also broke but I did not drop it. The only thing I did was remove the cover and then put it back. "

In order to remove the cover you should always remove it by pulling on the module (not the cover). Also, we are taking additional steps over here to try to prevent hinges from breaking. Roughly 1.5% (3/200) of our customers have had hinge problems where they claim the hinge broke without dropping the Visor or abusing the cover. We are taking steps to improve this quality control. We are looking for new (more padded) shipping bags to prevent shipping damages. We are also trying to change the injection point on the hinge so it is not on the side by the mechanical snap (having the injection gate by the mechanical snap is a stress concentration and can induce a break).

"Did this announcement ever take place? The lack of support for oversized modules is the only thing keeping me from buying..."

As Mark said above, we have clearance issues we are troubleshooting as fast as we can.

"What's the status on the prism blue cover for the prism?"

We took the announcment of the Prism Cobalt Blue color off our website. We are at a point where we are trying to paint these FlipCovers but our concerns are cost, quality, and durability (scratches very easily). We are begining to see why Handspring gave the Prism with a black color instead of cobalt blue

"No kidding, whoever said that handspring should purchase the FlipCover in bulk and offer with their Visor units (sans Edge) was right on"

As always ... thank you for all your support and being the early adopters of this product. We have been avidly trying to market these to Handspring, developers, and distributors. We had a few successes and will make announcements when appropriate.

Thumbs up FlipCover is awesome

I ordered a Flipcover in black for my Prism last Friday. I got it Monday and love it. The fit is perfect and the look solid (although I would love to see it in Prism blue).

I agree, Handspring should ship this product with every visor. Thanks FlipCover.

Question Does anyone know if they ship to Canada?

I sent an email via their site, but does anyone here know if they take orders from The Great (not so) White North?

FlipCover ships to all countries according to their FAQ.

I LOVE our FlipCovers, I just wish I could use them with modules (especially the SoundsGood and Innopack Compact Flash units). We have both green and ice, and they are the design that replace the module.

I have an Ice VDX, and the green circuit board shows through enough that the VDX-green covers and accessories look perfect with it!

2 questions:

1. We also got a few Graphite hinges. I was wondering why (not so much 'why spares', which seems a nice touch, but 'why graphite'.)

2. The blank module and the space in the module plug in the FlipCover bug me- there should be SOMETHING useful to do with this space! Spare batteries, reset pins, instructions, a small notepad, specially made stylus, screen cleaning kit, first-aid kit, small nuclear reactor, SOMETHING! Any ideas?

For the record- the FlipCover people are wonderful, and offer great shipping, prices, communications, etc.

Thanks for the info. I tried to find the answer to my question at their site, but couldn't.
[Edit] Yeah, turns out for some reason my browser window wasn't even displaying the FAQ button at home. Just caught the top of it using my machine at work.

Thumbs up RE: Madkins007

" We also got a few Graphite hinges. I was wondering why (not so much 'why spares', which seems a nice touch, but 'why graphite'.) "

You probablly ordered priority or overnight shipment and we probablly did not get your order out the next day so we opted to include some freebees. Why graphite? I don't have a good answer, other than they were probablly closest thing within arm's reach.

" The blank module and the space in the module plug in the FlipCover bug me- there should be SOMETHING useful to do with this space! Spare batteries, reset pins, instructions, a small notepad, specially made stylus, screen cleaning kit, first-aid kit, small nuclear reactor, SOMETHING! Any ideas? "

It's been bugging us too. If you think of something simple and creative, send an email to [email protected] and maybe we'll implement it into all of our FlipCovers!

Before I got any real modules, I trimmed down some Post-It notes and stuck those in there. Works well if you have one of those combo stylus/pens, like the one from Handspring that fits in the stylus slot.

What about storing a spare hinge in there?

Which would you order?

Just to be sure I understand, you're talking about inside the Handspring leather slip-on case that comes with the VDX, right?

Another Question:

I have a graphite VDX. Would an Ice FlipCover look good? Can you read alarms through it?

Thanks,

My guess would be that an Ice cover would be ok on a Graphite body (probably even on the other colors). The hinge and slot adapter should probably be black, though.

The Ice cover is frosted, not clear... while you can see that there's something displayed on the screen, it's not always easy to read (at least not with these old, tired eyes ). I find that more often then not, I have to flip the cover open to be sure... your mileage may vary!

I have a Prism with the ice flipcover, and though
its not clear, i am able to read the alarms without
fliping it open. This could be due to the prism being
color.

After some bad timing between us and our manufacturer, ice hinges and FlipCovers are back in stock !@!

My apologies to eveyone who has waited patiently.

Thank you.

FYI .... We will be getting our first production samples of the Prism and Platinum VERY shortly. Pending we have enough first shots off the tool, we will send some freebies out to those of you who have been waiting for the past 2-3 months in exchange for some color feedback.

Good to hear the ice hinges are in stock again. However I noticed the prices went up - a complete flipcover used to cost $13 and is now $20, a cover cost $7 and is now $10. I don't know about the other parts because I didn't order them seperately back when I ordered (April 2001). That's quite a price increase! No wonder you give free shipping now <g>.

The product is still excellent.

So, it's been over 4 months and no word.
Is the "improved" flipcover dead?
I love my current one, but it's a hassle with multiple Springboards.
