here's the bad news... i was having a problem similar to this and the only answer i came up with was a hard reset... that was ok since i had a backup module, but if your coworker doesn't, i'm sorry.
you might try a soft reset while in the cradle, first though... it often fixes alot of problems. also, try alloting more memory to the serial port manager -- go to your palm folder, click once on the manager icon (make sure it doesn't open) go to the file menu, and get info... go to the memory option and boost the preferred size by 100% or so.
if these don't help, i think you're in for the hard reset option.
