Network Sync over YadaYada

It sounds good so far, but I'm a little curious about using a YadaYada modem for other apps.
If all I want to do is a Network Sync to my PC, can I do that, or is YadaYada the only app that I can use the modem with? Thanx if anybody knows.

Well, got the minstrel s today, plugged it in....and it works great. No problem at all.

This is on one of the 'tuned' VDX's btw.

Also, I am in the Orange County area of So Cal and the yadayada zip code check did not show coverage here...but
it would seem that they do.

This is in direct contravention to what they told me on the phone, and my recent experience. My YadaYada unit has been in my hands for less than an hour, and I've already made it work successfully.

2) I asked about storage possibilities on the module. He said that there is only enough space to store an IP address and TCP/IP stacks. THIS OFF NOVATEL's WEBSITE:

My Minstrel S has 1Mb of memory free, according to the File Mover application. I have yet to install the YadaYada software onto my VDX, so I imagine this will change.

4) So now I am worried about this one. I asked how long it takes to ship... 5-6 business days. Is this for real? [/B]

I ordered mine at 11:30p on Tuesday, and I have it today. Snow and all.

Visor DLX OS version work?

I am interested in this Yada Yada deal also.

I dropped my original Visor a few months back and had it immediately replaced. I don't know if they sent me one of the "optimized" Visors.

My Visor DLX has Palm OS v.3.1H2

Does anyone know if this will work with the Minstrel unit?

Also, anyone know how the coverage is in Houston, TX?

Thanks.
Mike

Question highly confused

Ok, someone fill me in. I REALLY want to get yadayada, especially since the modem is free now. But I only have a regular 2 meg Visor. Will it work at all with it?

Posted by VTL on 12-21-2000 10:45 PM:

Got mine today. Pretty neat, but the coverage drops out quite often, despite the fact that I'm sitting here in my office in downtown Seattle. However, now that I think of it my Verizon phone digital does that here as well, so maybe I shouldn't be surprised.

But hey, its free - at least if you don't count the monthly service fee.

YadaYada and Macintosh?

I ordered my free modem but then checked with support. They tell me that YadaYada doesn't currently support Macintosh and I can cancel my order. Is this true?

Thanks,
Ken

Most of these questions are answered above, but here it goes:

Visor/VisorDX/Plat/Prism all work with the Minstrel S - works better with a free, advance shipped replacement from the Hand.

There is 1 Meg of free memory on the modem, I use it to store my e-mail and browser programs, since they don't work without the modem installed.

I suggest downloading/using Blazer browser and ThinAir Mail, they work faster than my 56K pc modem (if I got the connection) Connections do seem to drop off every once in a while, but just turn the Visor off/on and it can reconnect pretty fast. Hopefully, if enough of us try it, and your freinds see you browsing/e-mailing from your car or wherever, they will have more money for more towers.

You get a replacement Visor from Handspring, no strings attached. You get a month to play with the modem; I'm sure if you have no signal, you'll return it. Like the Geek.com review (where's VisorCentral's?) says, any self respecting geek will call 800 yadayada right now! Merry X-mas!

Exclamation just a heads up...

..since I have both a 'optimized' VDX and my original one here (sending back the original one next week) I dedided to see how the minstrel s worked on the old unit.....it does not work at all.

It seems that you really do need the optimized VDX.

[email protected] is the email to my VDX btw ;-)

Question

So help me get this straight:

The YY modem works where ever there is digital CDPD service?

VTL, can you tell me a little more about the YY coverage in Seattle (and anywhere else in Washington that you've been with it)? I'm used to AT&T's digital coverage for my cell phone, I'm guessing that Airtouch's (what people seem to be using for coverage comparison) is about the same.

Posted by rtalain on 12-22-2000 05:48 AM:

Well, ordered my free modem on Tuesday night and received it UPS Red on Thursday. Not bad. Got it set up, but I don't have an optimized Visor Deluxe so it keeps on losing the signal. On Handspring's website, it says that there will be information with the modem to explain how to exchange for an optimized Vdx, but alas, there was nothing in the YadaYada box even mentioning the RF interference problem.

Does anyone know how to trade my non-optimized Vdx for an optimized one?

Just call Handspring and explain that you have the Minstrel from YadaYada. That's all I did and they sent me an optimized one - got it in 8 days.

The guys in tech support have been great; which is more than I've heard about Omnisky's support. Another important distinction is that Yadayada supports Macintosh, and Omni doesn't.

I think you've got that backwards. According to the information I've gotten from YY and Omnisky, YY does not and has no intention of supporting Mac, at least in the near future. OS supports Mac out of the box.

The thing is, someone here posted a message saying they got YY running off a Mac. So maybe there's a way to get around using YY's software?

Posted by Anomaly on 12-22-2000 05:27 PM:

So many things to respond to.
(1) The 888 number was correct - but they aren't open at night. I finally got to call this morning. First guy didn't know how to do the refund, but got help and left me a message 10 minutes later, saying that they had credited my account with $149. Can't beat that.

(2) My Minstrel S is currently working with my original VDX, but not the optimized one. But I don't think it's an RF problem. It recognizes that a module has been inserted, but isn't seeing the software - shows "0 files" and "0k of 0k free." This after doing a complete restore from BackUpBuddy on my original VDX or after doing a clean hard reset. Handspring tech support has been useless.

(3)Handspring will not let you change colors on the replacement VDX. I tried. I liked my Ice, but it was backordered for over a month. Finally got it last week.

(4) The optimization is, I believe, just better RF protection. From the looks of it, they rearranged the boards on the inside a bit.

(5) Software on the Minstrel S - plenty of room left of the 2 meg, to put other browsers or what not on it. I just wish you could delete the EudoraMail and EudoraWeb that come pre-installed.

(6) Doesn't necessarily work wherever there is CDPD. It's on Verizon's wireless network (OmniSky is on ATT).

(7) I like Blazer too (www.bluelark.com) and ProxiWeb too (www.proxinet.com).

Okay, enough rambling

Angry Bob Damn it!!!

I call Handspring about getting an optimized Visor Solo, and they tell me that they don't exchange or have optimized Visor Solos. SO now I'm f*!^ked. I don't want to buy a VDX just for this, trying to save money here. Any idea what I can do?

Buy a Prism... heh heh. It's Christmas, isn't it?
