Visor Deluxe Wireless email web possible?
If this has been addressed, can someone give me the link.
We are trying to connect an 8mg Visor Deluxe wirelessly. Our primary need is to receive and send email via a pop3 account (though we could use an email provided by the wireless service). Web browsing is secondary and not as critical as the email.
If a wireless option is not available, could we connect it to a digital star tac with a cable. The star tac is not really useful for the email and web browsing.
Thanks

Star TAc connect last option
The cell phone plan is minimal.
Was thinking of the omnisky or similiar. Is that possible on a deluxe?

Certainly is. Minstrel S works fine. Service area coverage is the main issue with CDPD.
minstrel S work with deluxe?
Omnisky says the ministrel S does not work with the Deluxe due to the OS version.
Can I patch the os?
or r they wrong?

I will try it and let you know. One of us is wrong, that's for sure.
what i found so far
Minstrel S works with the deluxe.
Omnisky service does not work with OS3.1 (the OS on the deluxe).
Omnisky only works with OS 3.5 or higher.
Omnisky sells the modem for $269 with a $200 rebate if u sign up for a service contract.
Omnisky is a reseller for AT&T CDPD.
You can buy a Minstrel S modem for $369 and then sign up for At&t (same network used by Omnisky) you just do not use the Omnisky software.
Now $369 for the modem that works for the Deluxe or
buy a Plat for $249 at staples with a $40 off coupon, sign up for Omnisky net out at $69 and my total cost is $278 plus tax. And I end up with the 33mhz processor. Not sure I want to go that route but have found no cheaper modem for wireless service.
Any suggestions?

HOLD UP on all the patching, etc.! You can get the Minstrel S and wireless service for the Visor Deluxe from YadaYada (www.yadayada.com). I've been using it for about a year. It looks like they're still giving the modem for free with a contract. If you pre-pay 6 months it comes out to $34.95/month. Otherwise, it's $39.99/month. Service is virtually the same as Omnisky. Depending on where you live, your access comes from either AT&T Wireless (this is CDPD, which is different than its wireless phone service) or Verizon Wireless.
This is unlimited internet access. You can use a variety of e-mail programs to get POP mail either from your @yadayada.com address or others. I use MultiMail Pro and access my e-mail from 3 different e-mail accounts.
Yada Yada would be perfect as its At&t here where I am.
Im checking the web page now.
Thought I had read that Yada Yada was going out of business though?

Is anyone actually using the Minstrel S on a VDX? Surely someone is, but I tried it last night and can't get it to work. This is not Omnisky, just the Minstrel S straight from Novatel ($350 at CDW). It "almost" works, i.e. a couple of times I got it to register on the CDPD network (Verizon), but it wouldn't stay connected and I never could get it to do any work - e-mail, Avantgo synch, etc. If I put it my VPR, it worked. Keep in mind, CDPD coverage in Houston really, really sucks, which could be part of the problem. I have problems with the VPR fairly often. One thing that bothered me - with the VDX, after not being to able to connect and register, the Minstrel S locked up the system every time.
Ever since I got the Visorphone, I hardly use the Minstrel S any more anyway. The vendors would like you to believe that 19,200 bps has to beat the pants off 9600 bps, but in fact for e-mail and Blazer, I don't see much difference.

How do you know if your Deluxe is the right or wrong one? The one I will be using is about a year and half old.

You can go to ebay and get a Minstrel S modem there for under $100. Then go to Omnisky's site and get the updater for the Prism. This will load all settings for Omnisky. Then sign up for their month to month service which is the same price as if you got a modem from them and signed up for a year contract.
I have seen this work with ANY minstrel s modem from other services such as Yadayada.
Im my area, YY would work about 20 percent of the time. But now with Omnisky, it works around 80%. Same hardware, same CDPD service from ATT, just different providers.

The minstrel S combined with the Prism updater will work on a Deluxe running OS 3.1? I am in an area that has AT&T (which Omnisky uses) and so I am sure signal strength is strong.
