It is tempting, but I already have a Nextel which I love dearly because of the Direct Connect which is a walky talky feature. If I didn't have the nextel I'd jump on this!!!

Well, almost free... in my area the serviceplan is VoiceStream, which charges extra for data...

So now: get the visorphone and drop my # of devices, or just by the cable and hook my visor to my Sprint StarTac (but then no stowaway whilst online....)

I'm not sure if this is industry standard or not, but I'm not sure I can justify the expense for the ability to surf the web while I'm downtown.

No, it's probably using two GSM frequencies (bands) so that it can work in more than one country. General usage for a combo digital/analog phone would be dual-_mode_.

VoiceStream Billing Problems

I've been using VoiceStream's InfoStream plan (the 1500 minutes of data) for a year-and-a-half now. Well, they moved to a new billing system last October and since then their system has NOT been able to tell a voice call from a data call...it's completely screwed up. Every bill I've received from them since then has shown all my calls to be voice calls.

What happens is that you end up going over your alloted voice minutes because your data calls are counted towards voice.

They have been courteous enough to apply credits to my account for this major screw-up, but it's one BIG, BIG, hassle. If you plan to do some major surfing with the VisorPhone through VoiceStream, you better get some major minutes on your voice plan until they take care of this situation.

This problem is occurring with countless others, as well.

It's outrageous!

Right now I'm using my VDX with my Startac, and I was ready to switch to the VisorPhone so I wouldn't have to carry two devices. But VoiceStream wants to charge me an extra $30 to get e-mail and surf the Web -- which I'm now getting for free with my cables4pdas cable.

I don't understand why a Startac lets me go online with a regular phone call to my ISP (without any special data services), but a VisorPhone won't. It sounds like VisorPhone reduces the Visor's capabilities instead of increasing them. (Can anyone confirm that you can't use VisorPhone as a modem without Datastream?)

Besides, VoiceStream's "national coverage" plan excludes major parts of the country -- like California!!!! What "nation" do they live in?

I tried Yada Yada, and it was a bust. I was ready for VisorPhone, but not with this plan. I guess I'll have to wait for a CDMA version.

Yes - as long as you don't mind using your plan's voice minutes. (Although, sometimes it does take an extra call to VoiceStream to "really" activate data access).

Let me make sure I understand. So you don't have to buy Datastream to use VisorPhone as a modem, but your data calls count against your regular phone minutes?

(That would be the same as my Verizon account. I cancelled their Wireless Web service when I realized I didn't really need it.)

And what does it mean that you have to place an extra call to "really" activate data access? What do you say to them? How do you tell them you want to turn on data access but you don't want to pay for Datastream?

Didn't realize that Cingular changed their wireless data pricing. I was going to buy an @ctiveLink, but now??? Couldn't I just subscribe to Cingular's $6.99/month wireless Internet plan and do email by dialing in to my ISP, MindSpring? By directly accessing my MindSpring POP box or using Mail2Web, it appears that sending and receiving email wouldn't count towards my Cingular message limit of 100/month. I don't make many voice cell calls. The VisorPhone may be the best solution for me!

Yes, Cingular change their wireless data plan not too long ago. Now is 6.99 and usage time is deducted from voice minutes. Now the question is does those unlimited night weekend minutes apply here?

Cingular is the only GSM provider and it is not much bargain compare to CDMA with Verizon. Do anyone think here the CDMA version of Visorphone will come in a month at the same price?

I took lennonhead's advice when I first got my VisorPhone - I couldn't connect to my ISP at first, then I called VoiceStream customer support and had them reset the data service (even though their system showed that it was already activated). Works like a charm!
