-- Minstrel problems unique to YadaYada? (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=11120)

Question

I've noticed alot of YadaYada users are having problems shutting their Minstrel modems down. They get alot of crashes and hangs. I'm still having problems myself.

I was wondering if Omnisky or GoAmerica users are having the same problems.

I got that problem with my omnisky minstrel modem before,
but after I ask for a replacement modem, that problem is gone.
Good Luck!

Because I'm having so many problems with my Modem, I called YadaYada today, and I'm asking them to replace my modem with a new one. When I called they blamed the problem on Handspring, and (YadaYada tech support) called them up.. Now I'm waiting for them to give me a call back with the results of their conversation.

I used to get errors all that time when shutting down my minstrel w/ omnisky service. However, I rarely get them now. Here is something I've noticed: I insert the minstrel into the visor (prism), do my internet/email thing, then go to shut it down. I get an error and have to do a soft reset (modem is still attached). Once that is over with, I never get any errors when shutting the minstrel down. Its only that first time you put the minstrel in the visor. Leave it in there and all is well, for me anyways. I've also found that when shutting the modem down, it is a good idea to wait like 3 or 4 secs after the "connect" icon has changed into the "shutdown" icon, then tap it, wait another 2 - 3 seconds, and all is well. Doing it all quickly, one tap after the other, I have found sometimes results in errors requring resets. Hope that helps.

I haven't yet got that shutdown problem yet (knock on wood), but I have noticed that sometimes the Visor forgets about the Minstrel, someone here once suggested to go to your PREFS and review your network settings, you don't have to do anything, just look at them, this seems to do the trick.

Smile Yada Ydad Minstrel Update

FYI, There is a new version 3.1 of Yada Yada software that includes an update for the Minstrel S. We will see if it fixes these nagging problems?

Heck No. It still does that stuff.

I have noticed that it crashes a little less, but not much. Same "crash when shutdown" or "go into Minstrel app and nothing pops up" or "just crash for no apparent reason" or "Just try to remove me with out crashing crash"

But hey: When it's working, you gotta love it.

I agree... but I am very frustrated with no solution from YY.

My old, non-optimized VDX never crashed.

My new "optimized" VDX used to crash all the time. It had something to do with a conflict between DateBk4, alarms, and the minstrel app. I've found that when I remove the little gobbledygook notes that DB4 attaches to every appointment and ToDo, the Fatal Exception crashes go away. I still very occasionally get a non-response from the modem, requiring a pull-out-pop-back-in sorta reset to get the darn thing to get some action. But on the whole, I guess I've been lucky in my Yadayada service. I've not had too many problems.
