Question Replace w/silver or graphite?

I'm considering my third VPL replacement due to paint issues. This time it's on the top where the FlipCover hinge makes contact with the top of the VPL and, oddly, also down near the microphone and at a similar point on the right side, which I would imagine is also attributable to the FlipCover (since I haven't had this one in any other case), but I'm not sure. I like to think I'm a fairly benevolent owner...While I don't have a padded case, my VPL always has at least the FlipCover on it and is either on a table or in my pocket (with nothing else sharp in there). But the scratches still appear.

As much as I like the silver color over the graphite, I'm beginning to wonder if I'm not just better off replacing this one with a graphite. I bought it in January, so I've still got a few months to decide, but I figured I'd throw the questions out there: since the graphite VPL has become available, have VPL buyers been going for silver or graphite? Have many silver owners swapped theirs for graphite? Is the graphite case is a bit more scratch resistant than the painted silver case?

Unfortunately, it doesn't look like I'll be able to afford a new PDA in the near future, so just replacing it with something different really isn't an option for me right now. The other choices I can think of would be to

a) stick it out with this one or a replacement silver until I get utterly sick of the scratches, and then (assuming I'm past the warranty period) buy a replacement graphite case from gethightech.com (I think that's the vendor with OEM cases), or

b) get a replacement silver case and line the underside of the FlipCover and the appropriate hinge area with felt or something to minimize the chance of new scratches.

Of course, those two aren't necessarily mutually exculsive. Anyone care to provide some guidance?

I exchanged my Silver VPL for a Graphite a while back and have had no regrets. I will report though, that the finish on the case (I am quit sure it is black paint on black plastic) is wearing slightly, again in the places where the flip cover comes into contact with the case. BUT, because of the black plastic composition of the case, it is not nearly as noticable as on my Silver VPL.

Yes, GetHighTech supplies the Graphite case. Another alternative would be the DaveDesign aluminum cases. These are relativly expensive , but would give you the Silver coloring you like in a more robust package.

You may also want to have a look at this thread and this one for a run down on the Silver / Graphite VPL issue.

Well, unless you've got $250 to donate , I'll have to pass on the full aluminum case, as cool as it looks. The lite option is a possibility, but it's still an expensive option with respect to my level of dissatisfaction. I think for the cost I'd still rather just swap for another silver or a graphite.

How about a $75 1/2 case? DaveDesigns has a new case that replaces just the top half of your current case, leaving the back half made of plastic. It looks just like the $250 full case with the buttons and all but is a cheaper alternative. If I still had my Visor DLX I would think about buying this....

Yeah, that's what I meant when I said "the lite case." On Dave Design's site, they refer to their complete enclosure and their lite enclosure. For now, it's not bothering me enough to spend $75 on a new upper half. I can still return to HS for a replacement for the next five months or so, so I've got some time to ponder. I'm also curious to hear comments on the Dave enclosures once they're available next month before deciding for or against them.
