-- Mac HotSync -- Bizarre Things Happening (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=10944)
This may get a bit lengthy but any comments/suggestions would be most appreciated.
I'm trying to assist a coworker with a Mac OS 8.6 who has recurring problems with HotSync. It works for a while then just up and quits - which it did last week. I've tried various things gleaned from VC threads but none seem to provide a permanent solution.
The last time it worked on it and today what seems to make it work is fiddling with the settings for a modem sync even though she does not ever use modem sync. If I go in and change the modem sync settings close it out, reopen it and change them back to the original settings it will hotsync. This makes no sense to me - any ideas?
The other odd thing today. I did back-to-back syncs just to make sure it was working. Both times it said it was installing Update 3.1.1 (that's what I thought I saw as it flashed by) both times at the end of the sync it indicated I needed to reset it. Reset went fine both times. Out of curiosity I checked the conduit and there was nothing listed to be installed, but after exiting here it would no longer sync. At this point I set the install conduit to "do nothing" it synced fine and did not indicate that it was installing anything. The conduit reverted to install mode and I could not get it to sync again until I set the install conduit to do nothing. This time I made it the default and it's syncing fine.
I didn't have time to test out actually installing a file but am considering doing that tomorrow to see what happens. FYI hotsync is not enabled at startup.
She's a pretty basic user has only loaded a few other apps but in the long run will need to be able to install files at hotsync.
Any suggestions?
Did you install Desktop 2.6.1
That claims to remove most of the problems (though it hasnt for me with PB G3 and OS 9.1) - I have a G3 desktop with 8.6 and I have usually no problems with syncs.
Clear your hotsync prefs.
Re-Install
Dont install any firmware updates until you have syncing working well.
Bye
AM
This helped me...
I had kinda the same thing happen to me. I had a Mac 6100/66 upgraded with a G3, and running OS 8.6, and a Visor Serial cradle. Hotsyncs were never a problem, then suddenly one day Hotsyncs stopped working and gave timeout errors.
I fixed it by installing Handspring's Hotsync Updater: http://www.handspring.com/support/t...61updater.jhtml
Even though the update is supposed to be for USB Hotsyncs and Mac OS 9.0.4, it fixed the problem.
