Question Is the VisorPhone GPRS enabled?

Does anyone know if the currently shipping VisorPhone ("Worldphone") is GPRS enabled/compatible? I was told by a Voicestream rep that this service would be rolled out in the next 6 months. He claimed that the 'always on' data service would be 56k and 'not too expensive'.

Any info out there?

Unhappy GPRS enabled

I asked the same to handspring suport, they said no. But I hope it was true. That way I woulnd't have to buy a new one with GPRS capabilities, that is, if there's ever one of those.

Exclamation I doubt it

I doubt that the GSM VisorPhone is GPRS enabled. It was released almost a year ago and was therefore designed more than a year ago. There were simply no GPRS chipsets or modules available back then. How do I know: I'm an EE working on a project that uses a GSM/GPRS module in it. This GPRS module is actually still in development, not production, and is the one that will hit mass production before any others. So unless Handspring redesigned the GSM VisorPhone within the last few months (and didn't tell anyone about it) it's likely not going to be GPRS ready. Sorry.

Unhappy Yup, no gprs.

Thanks for your posts and insight. I also emailed Handspring support and got the following answer:

Dear Joel Forman,

Thank you for your email. Currently, the Visorphone does not support GPRS.

Thank You,
XXXXXXX
Handspring Technical Support

I guess that's that. I still love the Visorphone as is. Maybe Handspring will release a new version for GSM that is GPRS compatible in the future.

Joel
