BrowseIt

Where the heck can you get this software? I've heard so much about it, I would love to download Palm apps on my VP! Also, would like to compare Blazer to something with other options. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance to all!

Problem with Browse-it

I downloaded and installed Browse-it on my Visor, and then
created an account on intellisync. I can log into the intellisync
account on my PC, but when I try to use Browse-it on my visor,
I get the error message "Invalid username; please contact
http://support.intellisync.com/b1_support.htm". I am able
to use Blazer and Avantgo, so it's not a modem issue. I have
set the user account and password under "options: general".
Under "options: server" it says "proxy.intellisync.com" server
port 8001.

I am not sure what is up. My copy of Browse-It came on my ThinModem+ and all I had to do was input the Username & Password supplied with the modem (these were generic ei. "thinmodemuser439"). I have not changed anything else on mine.

Your set-up info looks the same as mine, so I am confused as to why it does not work.

BTW - I am using Version 2.0a

Arrow Browse-It

Not sure if it is related, but I could not get on the Internet with Browse-It over the weekend at all.

Browse-it

http://www.pumatech.com/072701.html

"Pumatech is taking proactive steps to trim expenses in all areas that are not crucial to meeting its core business objectives in an effort to accelerate our return to profitability. For example, we are suspending our efforts on the release of our Intellisync.com service in light of the apparent slowdown in wireless adoption as well as the potentially costly customer acquisition costs associated with successfully launching a fee-based Internet services. This will not only allow Pumatech to reduce costs, but also to re-deploy those internal assets associated with the project to more profitable areas in line with our long-term strategies."

Browse-it is currently available in branded versions from YadaYada, MovilGo and Zero Gravity Wireless.

Unhappy

This is a bummer. I sometimes would use Browse-it when Avantgo wouldn't work to view a live site, especially the non-mobile ones. Too bad PumaTech wasn't a bit more upfront with people announcing the service has been discontinued.

OK, so there are basically 4 web browsers out there:
Avantgo - free
Blazer - which is now $19.95
Browse-it - which is belly up unless you go with a co-branded service that you pay for
EudoraWeb - I just found out about this one, Nice that it does not use a proxy, but that make for huge image downloads. Comments anyone?

I'm not so sure that Intellisync's announcement means that Browse-It is dead except for branded flavors.

With my VisorPhone, VDX, and Browse-It, I was just able to read this very discussion.

Well, I still can't log in. I still get the 'invalid username'
error. And it wastes a minute of SprintPCS airtime each time I
try.

BTW, Eudora doesn't support images, unless I missed something.

That would explain how they can claim to be twice as fast as any other Palm Browser and not use a proxy.

Interesting, I tried to connect a bit ago and was unable to get anywhere with Browse-it, using my.intellisyc.com or any other URL.

Browse-it Status

Although Pumatech has suspended Intellisync.com and public Browse-it development, the site is still somewhat operational - without any technical assistance/support.

Again, this is a good example of "you get what you pay for"...with even Blazer costing $19.95, anything that offers an technology advantage (such as proxy browsing), and requires ongoing support, there must be some sort of upfront charge or subscription to make it a sustainable operation. The days of getting everything for free on the Internet are over.

I will stick with AvantGo. You can't beat sync mode for poor signal areas or no signal areas (planes especially) and their wireless performance competes or beats the other products listed. Add the sheer volume of content available through their site and the price and I can't see shooing any of the others.

Posted by autocode1 on 08-23-2001 06:18 AM:

If you use AvantGo, be sure to uncheck the "use tables" box
in the preferences; otherwise, some links won't be clickable.
I found this out the hard way.

I too was wondering if something was screwy with BrowseIt. It usually connects, but after long periods of time. Browsing with my Thinmodem+ and AvantGo right now. Works reasonbly well with a few glitches:

1. Occasionly get "File too large to display" or "Insufficent memory to display page" I have plenty of memory and the cache set large.

2. One annoying glitch is that when using Yahoo mail it says "Yahoo mail requires Netscape or MS Explorer"

Guess I may have to break down & buy Blazer.

Any thoughts?

Are you connecting to Yahoo mail through http://mobile.yahoo.com/home? I have not been asked that question using Avantgo. I also have only had the modem for two days.

Also, Is there a way to bookmark with Avantgo?

I do use mobile Yahoo to check mail, but I prefer the full version because the mobile version does not show clickable hyperlinks.

Forgot a complaint you reminded me of.......inability to bookmark.

Also, a nice feature of BrowseIt: by holding down over a link would display the address of the link.

Anyone have a comparison review of Blazer vs. BrowseIt? Hate that I can't preview Blazer before buying. Pretty limited options now .

Concerning the file size issue.....anyone try to access www.palmgear.com site? I get the error message using Avantgo, my VDX, & Thinmodem+. Let me know.

Thanks.

The go wireless section is designed to provide an easy way for users to find methods to go wireless.

If you already have a wireless connection, click on 'my wireless' on the AvantGo home page (it is near the bottom). From there, you will have wireless access to all of the channels they have.

Thanks. (NB: The link is actually buried in the "My Account" section which requires you to "install" wireless support first--it didn't seem to install anything so maybe activate is a better word--and then has access to FAQs.)
