Question

I have been looking into getting a wireless modem for my platinum, but the 39.95 a month charge is a little prohibitive, and I already pay roughly the same amount for my cable modem. Does anyone do it cheaply?

I have a visor prism and had existing dsl service with Verizon for my home computer. I just got a visorphone and am able to dial into my verizon isp to surf the web. i use blaze and it works really well. I too thought I would need another service, but my visorphone connects to my existing isp.

Unhappy

I'm looking into wireless modems, and not the visorphone, though. (something like yada yada or omnisky) And cable modem is not dial up. There are no phone numbers, sadly. So when you use visorphone to dial into your DSL, you can surf the net?

I think Verizon offers some sort of deal where you get both. I have a cable modem too and am looking for a free ISP. I'm going to go search the forums to see what I can find...

I thought I would need another ISP to surf the web (was looking for a free isp). After trying out several, none would allow me to connect. I then tried Verizon (which I use for my DSL service at home). I went to their website, found local numbers (as if I was dialing in, instead of DSL), put the number in my prism and dialed. It connected, I then use Blazer to surf. It is really great. So I don't need anohter ISP to surf the web. I am really happy with that. I would imagine the minstrel or other modems will work the same way.

No, not the Minstrel, it requires a wireless service provider to supply you with a connection. You are using your cell phones connection to dial into your ISP.

I decided to go with Juno for a free ISP. There is a thread here that describes how to use a program called RasSpy to find out all the info you need to be able to use a free ISP on your Visor.

Question

Can I use RaSspy to connect with a YY or Minstrel in my visor?

Nah, it doesn't work like that.

You gotta have a connection already to use the free ISP.

RasSpy is just used to get the "real" log-in names, passwords and access numbers for your free ISP account. Then you use some other program on the Visor to put all that info in. You either use a landline modem, VisorPhone, or the Modem in a Cell Phone.

So you end up paying for it in some way, though not if you use a landline modem (connected to a phone wire).

The Cell Phone minutes are deducted (or you use some sort of Cell Phone web access), or you pay for the $40 a month for YY or OmniSky.
