-- POLL: Replacement Units (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=1529)
Arranged today to have my week-old unit replaced due to a dead pixel. Makes no practical difference, but hey, I paid good money, I'm entitled... Anyway, I asked them to make sure the replacement was a new unit, not a refurbished one. They said it was likely it would be new, since my unit was originally ordered from them, and only very recently. But here's what I'd like to know from those of you who have had units replaced by Handspring:
1. When (MM/YY) did you have your unit replaced?
2. How old was your unit when it was replaced?
3. What was the nature of the damage (your error/technical malfunction/physical damage in shipping or afterwards)?
4. Was your original purchase from Handspring or a retailer?
5. Was your replacement new, a refurb, or can't you tell?

I have been through 6 replacements. My belief is that they were refurbished units, but there was no way to tell that was evident. I bought my original in April of this year. 2 replaced because of a scratched display, 1 because the glass was loose, 2 because I lost my data when I replaced the batteries, and the last because it would only turn on after a soft reset. I now have had a GVD for about 3 weeks that came brand new, its been fine.

My current GVDx is my fifth
. I bought the original in January directly from Handspring (from their website).
The first one had persistent hotsync problems (I had to soft- and hardreset it all the time). The second one drained my batteries like crazy. The third and fourth ones had a loose screen (BTW I did _not_ drop or otherwise mishandle it - seems to be a quality control issue). All my replacements were refurbs, even though the last two times I expressly asked for a _new_ one and the CS guy said that he will make sure I get a new unit.
I think you get a new unit only within the first month or so after you purchased your original unit.
I hope that now the luck will be on my side and this Visor will work without any problems for the next months/years...
Keep your fingers crossed,

07/00
2. How old was your unit when it was replaced?
About 2 weeks
3. What was the nature of the damage (your error/technical malfunction/physical damage in shipping or afterwards)?
It had the DRAM bug and I wanted a non-buggy unit, rather than using the patch.
4. Was your original purchase from Handspring or a retailer?
My original purchase was from a retailer - Best Buy.
5. Was your replacement new, a refurb, or can't you tell?
I'm pretty sure it's new. It didn't have any physical defects or blemishes that I could see.

How can you tell if a unit is new or a refurb? I have had three replacement units so far, and I couldn't tell whether any of them were refurbs or not.
tyler
I just got my first replacement unit, after keeping my first Deluxe for 6 months. My screen cracked for no apparent reason (it was in the soft case, with the hard cover on the screen, at the time).
I ordered from Handspring in Janurary.
I *think* I got a refurb unit, but I certainly can't tell. It looks good as new.

2nd Ice unit. First one bought at retail outlet, had a bad screen. Would "flutter" at the top of the screen. Happened about 2 weeks after purchase, called Handspring and got a replacement. I suspect that the case was putting pressure on the LCD display.
No problems yet with unit #2 - may have been a refurb, but couldn't tell. Nice screen, etc.

Had my Visor for about 9 months and just the other day pixles started appearing on the screen when it was off. They started growing in funny patterns.......They shiped me a new one today.....it looks new anyways.
Overall I have really like my Visor BUT it is not as stable as my Old Palm Pro. I have to reset it about 3 times a week where as my old Palm was like 3 times a year. We will see what this new one does.
Heyday
